I just bought a 2000 Kx 250 off of a close friend and the bike is in excellent shape...has great compression and runs great. The problem is you have to bump start the bike because this is the 3rd time the kick start shaft broke due to kick back. My Friend said when he got the bike 2 yrs ago it kicked over fine. He put the bike away for the year and all of the sudden started having this problem. I should also probably mention this bike was piped and jetted by a reputible dealer in my area but like I said when this bike is running, it sounds and runs perfect. If anyone has any ideas as to where to start with this problem they'd be greatly appreciated....Thanks in advance

No idea what to suggest, but I had a basically brand-new 2001 KX250 that kicked-back often as well. Still have a nasty scar on my shin from not wearing boots one day.

I just got the bike and havent even attempted to kick it over yet in fear of breaking another shaft.... Im kinda just going by what my buddy told me.... do you know if there is anything else other than kickback that could have caused 2 broken kick start shafts?...Im stumped here and have been probing the web with no luck...

Check the timing.
KX250? I've only even gotten slight kickback on 2 strokes (barely enough to even feel it). The only KX250 I've worked on (1992 model) was a bitch to start and never seemed to behave like a normal bike. Only my high comp 4t pit bike had issues with kickback.

Timing advanced. It’s firing way before tdc and that’s the kick back. Retard the timing a tad....

Also helps to carefully find TDC, then bring kicker up to top again and then kick it hard all way through. Some bikes,,particularly old open 2 strokes are notorious for kicking back if carelessly wacking at kicker not paying attention to where on stroke you are.
