Come on, Windham? Even if you guys are being smartasses about him mailing it in for 2 years that's BS. Remember him absolutely killing it in that heat race? Right before he scrubbed himself into oblivion?

I think they're talking about 2002-2003 when he broke his femur and disappeared for a while

Does that really count as a retirement though? Lots of guys go MIA during rehab. And if they don't come back will at least send out a PR saying so.

Not really, not in the sense of just disappearing; there was a info about why he stood down at the time.

Contrast that to Shultz, who won the 500 title and just disappeared like DB Cooper.

I think most mentioned packed it in with no fan-fare.
Shultz beat his body to a pulp, no bueno. He did do some SX in Europe 1985.
Still around, just another working stiff Smile !

Just left the sport without an official announcement of retirement?
He did not retire, he could not get a ride on a factory bike. Big difference.

Ha! I had just recently read that article. I dont think it's derailing the thread. Right on topic.

Yogi ghosted himself too:

And who could question him for it?

Personally, I think that James was a gift to the sport. He took risks that he had no business taking, and we all got to see it happen. Of course, when the margins of success are as slim as James was willing to accept, he came up short on a frequent basis.

And some of this group just loved to pile on him for it. IMO, that was a shame.

I would have no issues what so ever if James simply walked off into the sunset. I got to see him push the limits (several times in person), and I still get goose bumps when I think of the things that he did.

At a Salt Lake City race (the one where Chisholm and Reed ended up in the same line), James was walking into the stadium for the pre-practice walk through, and he walked about 10 feet away from me. I was looking him right in the eye, and he looked up at me with a "mean mug". WTF? I started smiling, and gave him a "thumbs up", and he gave me that patented James grin back, from ear to ear. It was pretty cool.

Man I don't think anyone in our sport at the level stew was just vanish. He said in a Matthes Podcast that when he was done he wouldn't say a thing. However he has stated he is not done....I just miss seeing that dude ride. Watched JS7th Wonder of the World for the 1,000th time yesterday lol. I actually have that video converted to a song on my phone and bluetooth in the 98 civic and hearing stew hit the gas awwww love it! lol
