I agree and there's no better way to put it than you gotta love him. I was lucky enough to meet him on a few occasions out at Indian Dunes and he was great to us kids. I had no idea how big of a star he was back then (being that i was just a kid) and you could never tell if you didn't know . Everyone out at the track just treated him like one of the guys and vice versa. I read later in life that that's what he loved most about the motorcycle racing scene. When he was at a track or out at a desert race nobody treated him any differently then everyone else and he loved just being one of the guys.

Not sure but for sure the desert. There were parts like when they're going through the little river or creek that it looked like Indian Dunes but we didn't have any cactus out there. My guess would be somewhere out in the kern county desert.

Stop it with the hero bullshit - it sounds gay.

I respect certain people, but I don't have heroes.

Like the word "Class", "hero" is used - overused - too much in American culture.

Heros you say....

Short story and very much true.

I was in a Santiago Hotel Lobby having breakfast ...there was 4 of us and one was Mr Smith. We got talking about Mr Smith's unique history in our sport and all had a great time. After a short pause I looked over at Mr Smith and told him that he was not my hero, my hero was Mr McQueen. Mr Smith smiled and said that his hero was also Mr McQueenSmile

Mr Smith then shared countless Steve McQueen stories......way cool.

Cool interview with Malcolm Smith in recent AMA mag or Cycle News, I forget -

anyway, talking about ON ANY SUNDAY - they wanted to ride on the beach that sits

on Camp Pendleton - supposedly there was no way to make it happen

until ol' Bullitt made the call to the base commander...

...................made it happen...

Steve McQueen is why I started riding. I saw him (yeah I know it was really Ekins) jump that fence in The Great Escape I said "I want to do that".

Never actually jumped a fence. Ran into a few and did a lot of jumping but never forgot him.

Steve McQueen played Frank Bullitt in a classic car-chase flick - think it was 1968...

A dear friend of mine used to work for Malcolm at K&N Motorcycles in the service department. He told stories of McQueen showing up with a case of beer under his arm and just sitting down in the back talking dirt bikes with the mechanics. He described him as just a regular guy who loved his dirt bikes.

I love the story of the movie studios putting a clause in one of his contracts for a film that he could not race dirt bikes....so he started racing cars!
