Its not nearly as gnarly there as it is for the national! Dont get me wrong, its a big jump! But at the national it is deep moist loam and the face is steep as fuck as well as the landing being not nearly as forgiving. There it is hard packed and beaten down.

He was a little happy to have made it. Ha! I wonder if his exuberance was from actually clearing it or nervous relief because he didn't die?

Awesome.
Seeing that jump was on my bucket list and I made the trip to the National in 2011.
Great experience thanks to my friends in Ohio.

Just doubling The Leap is very satisfying for an old geezer like me.

off topic slightly, but i remember a picture thread on here years ago where you guys were talking about huge jumps at local tracks, and blind jumps etc.

Someone posted a pic of about 3 guys all mid air (25 ft or so) on a blind jump where the landing was a steep downhill. IF anyone remembers this please help, THAT must have taken big dogs dangly bits.

What must be going thru your head in that big sweeper the first time you're gonna hit it? Gotta be adrenaline level 381,000,000.

Seems like the 450s just mosey on thru the corner, then pin it in third all the way up the face, maybe it's just deceiving tho.

I can't figure that jump out? Looks huge on pic, and he gets some serious air, but third gear pinned? Seems he went up one gear only after entering the track, and seems he went out on second? I was picturing a jump like that asked for forth gear?

Kid got balls no doubt!

I did it in '92 and it didn't have as big of a lip back then or something, because not too many did it on a 250 (2 stroke), and nobody did it on a 125. When Bubba did it on the 125, I think the take off was different. It looks bigger now.

It was scary every lap because the bike was wrung out...and it had to be.

The jump is called LaRocco's leap because he is the guy who first hit it. It was at the RedBud 125cc National in 1991

I'm sure he did it on a 500 also though.

That video actually made it look smaller than it actually is. But good for that dude! I would be just as stoked to nut up and go for it.

The video doesn't give you a good idea of how steep the takeoff really is, it's pretty intimidating on the way up.

I think DV has mentioned it isn't even full throttle in 3rd gear on a 450 to clear it.

IMO (from a 60-year old that loves it):

- the track crew controls the ease of approach by how deep and how wet they make the corner and straight before it

- the jump face is tall, seemingly vertical and blind as to where it will lead you

- I only double it, but have slightly overjumped without much effort and slammed the face of the third bump
