Where do Engines go to die?

Im looking for a blown up Engine for a YZ250f.. years 2014-2018.. i want to learn how to build motors and i figured i might be able to find a severely damaged motor for really cheap.

Let me know if anybody knows of one..

They dont die. They get rebuilt. Blown motor assemblies by themselves are kindof rare

so you are telling me, out of all the bikes made from 2014-2018 are still running and being used? I find that hard to believe...

no I don't think he's saying that. I think he's saying that they get rebuilt or parted out typically. There isn't a magical graveyard where dirt bike motors go when their owners are done with them. You might be able to find a full/partial bike with a blown motor in it, but you're still going to be paying a pretty decent amount. especially for one that's relatively new like that.

Look at it like this. Some guy has a 15 yz250f and blows the motor. The bike still has decent value so it doesn't make sense to just scrap the bike and toss the motor out. To save money 99% of people will salvage all the parts possible from the motor. IF they decide not to fix it they part it out and sell all the good stuff from the bike or the cut loses and sell as is. Rarely will you find someone just selling a blown up motor. You may be able to find something much older that's blown up but still not common.

a "severely" blown motor is one that needs a crank, a piston, a cylinder, a complete cylinder head, crankcases, counterbalancers, etc. This is what the one blown 2018 YZ250FX motor I saw needed. Broken rod demolished everything.
so you would essentially be buying a transmission and a bunch of fasteners and building it all from new parts. Not much to work with
a bike that just needs a crank and top end will usually just get slapped back together, wrench rabbit style

Yeah why not. Rebuilt or sold for parts is how it goes. Nobody pitches entire motor assemblies.

This is a topic I'm interested in too as I've never really messed with a 4-stroke engine. Or at least not tried to put one back together - getting them apart isn't real hard.

The problem I've seen it cost.

It is no big trick to find a non-running 250f on craigslist of Facebook market place. 'Won't start", 'Needs head", 'needs rebuilt' with older ones going for around $1000 and newer ones for 2 & 3 times that.

But then comes the questions of 1) How much $$ will I put into it to rebuild? and 2) What is bike worth after all that?

Personally, just haven't found the right deal yet.

If you're interested in learning, buy the cheapest running motocross engine you can find.

Where do complete engines go? Here's one example:

I have a complete '10 model Suzuki 250F engine and carb that has been sitting in my back shed about five years. I offered to help a kid rebuild his bike and he didn't have any cash for the parts. I'd give it away, but last year he got in touch, so I have to wait another four. I made this kid re-assemble the same engine after we made a parts list so nothing got lost. What got lost was his interest in motocross.

Lots of guys think they're going to rebuild their own engine, they take it apart (maybe with a friend's help) then see the cost of all those new parts. Those engines typically sit disassembled in a variety of milk-crates, boxes and/or bags for a handful of years in a dusty, poorly lit shed or garage.
