since the introduction of these Swedish Cake bikes (ridecake.com), it's hard not to think about where this all might lead. watch the video on the site; these look to be nimble machines (with presumably good suspension). the idea of having an incredibly light machine with power, that's territory Altra hasn't covered, to my knowledge. as more companies take this on, it could get pretty interesting. like a hybrid between BMX and supercross with electric powered, super nimble, super light bikes. some variations of supercross/mx are on the horizon.
Possible timeline for the Alta/E-bike Market:
Now: Alta is popular with vet class racers and weekend warriors that can ride on land they previously didn't have access to.
Near future: Alta and other electric bikes are given an AMA classification so that they can legally compete at a high level.
Next: Alta releases a youth model, and all of the dads that enjoyed ripping their Alta will want one for their kid so they can share the experience.
Distant future: A new crop of amateurs grows up racing the Alta, and eventually, the best of the best will turn pro having never ridden an internal combustion engine. When kids turn pro having grown up racing the Alta, that's when we'll really be in a new era.
While this is total speculation, it's fun to think about. Imagine the new riding styles and techniques that will emerge from top amateurs and pros that grew up on this type of bike. While 10 years ago we were talking about the bubba scrub, we could be discussing a whole new "move" or "passing style" or "cornering technique" that wasn't possible on our current style of motorcycle.
