since the introduction of these Swedish Cake bikes (ridecake.com), it's hard not to think about where this all might lead. watch the video on the site; these look to be nimble machines (with presumably good suspension). the idea of having an incredibly light machine with power, that's territory Altra hasn't covered, to my knowledge. as more companies take this on, it could get pretty interesting. like a hybrid between BMX and supercross with electric powered, super nimble, super light bikes. some variations of supercross/mx are on the horizon.

People may pretty absurd amounts of money for mountain bikes already, so I don't see a lot of merit to this comparison. Plus, $14000 is a little inaccurate... Alta has already cut the price of the Redshift pretty significantly.

I think Alta has the potential to be incredibly disruptive (in a good way) to the moto industry, and I'm excited to see the way our sport will evolve.

Possible timeline for the Alta/E-bike Market:

Now: Alta is popular with vet class racers and weekend warriors that can ride on land they previously didn't have access to.

Near future: Alta and other electric bikes are given an AMA classification so that they can legally compete at a high level.

Next: Alta releases a youth model, and all of the dads that enjoyed ripping their Alta will want one for their kid so they can share the experience.

Distant future: A new crop of amateurs grows up racing the Alta, and eventually, the best of the best will turn pro having never ridden an internal combustion engine. When kids turn pro having grown up racing the Alta, that's when we'll really be in a new era.

While this is total speculation, it's fun to think about. Imagine the new riding styles and techniques that will emerge from top amateurs and pros that grew up on this type of bike. While 10 years ago we were talking about the bubba scrub, we could be discussing a whole new "move" or "passing style" or "cornering technique" that wasn't possible on our current style of motorcycle.

I want to see it break off on its own and create a new breed of Pro and implement it into the current program. E power specialist/pros, lites specialist/pros, 450 specialist/pro. Pick your poison for your career path.

Don’t they already race mopeds in Cuba?
I remember the first time I saw a moped race. A guy used to bring one to the tracks on Sundays for pit riding duties. One day at the last motocross track in the state still operating a forward-falling starting gate, he rode it in some bumpy stuff and hit a few jumps out behind the lot. As usual, he and his tiny cycle became objects of destruction and mayhem. To see him drive it away afterward was life altering stuff. As he was heading west toward his rig another guy, riding his own moped, blew by him. The sun must have been in their eyes on the way because they couldnt decide who the winner was. There were plenty more pits to ride... and ridden they were, but it couldn't last forever. Having felt the pinnacle of moped greatness after jumping some crazy fires the night before the 1990-something Millville national, the moped of mayhem and its rider must have retired. As did real partying before the national. Spring Creek said no party, no moped. Surely they meant no moped, no party!

That bike is one of the ugliest things I have ever seen.
