Advice? I was in the ninth grade when LL started in 1982. My dream has always been to make it to the Amateur National Championship. I use to race lots of hairs scrambles back in school. I'm 52 now, no kids, single, have $$$$ and time. I bought a Suzuki RMZ450. I'm taking lessons. I'm getting better/faster. I'm working my butt off to get into shape for next year-2020 for the 50+ class. Any non-sarcastic advice for someone who is chasing a dream? Thanks

get in shape and race as much as you can. Get gate drops. If you finish top 2 at your area qualifier you may have the speed to do well enough at regionals to make it. The races are short so starts are key. Just my experience in 45+

Thank you very much AZRider. My trainer is working with me on cornering and rut riding right now.
I'm running 6 miles in an hour 3 days a week, cycling for an hour 2 days a week, and doing Tapout workout series.
Thanks for the advice!

Good for you.

Two things I wish I would have known 15 years ago.

1.Core strength. Squats and planks etc.. You will notice a huge difference in your riding position/endurance after a few months.

2. Get a basic suspension re-valve. Then get comfortable using suspension clickers by educating yourself and experimenting.

Stretch before every ride. Work on sprint laps....take lap times and keep trying to improve little by little. Make sure you are taking enough time off to recover from a ride day. Be safe but not too safe and have fun young man!

Remember a low rpm pull is better than clutching and sounding like your flying. Best moto advice ever. Our old coach used to make us go a whole day clutch-less. Swimming is another great exercise and less wear and tear on the joints. You could totally V-log this too, id watch.

Be willing to travel to multiple qualifiers. I know some regions are easier to qualify for then others.

I am excited for you

Thanks to all. I've had so many people, including family, telling me I'm too old. You'll never make it in racing or to a Nat'l Championship at LL's. Nay-sayers are great for stubbornness!!!
Thanks again folks! Blessings.

Nutrition and getting in shape go hand in hand.

If you can hang with the local 40plus class you might qualify for 50plus. Keep signing up with the local 30plus and 40plus classes and use that to measure how your doing.

Second this. I'm 53 and trying to get back into it. You need lots and lots of gate drops. I would race every weekend somewhere if you can.

Get a 110 or 125 pit bike and practice keeping your momentum in turns. Or even a 125 two stroke big bike. It's a real eye opener to how much riders rely on the power of a 450 to compensate for poor technique. Real inspiring to see. Thanks for sharing.
