Haven't tried the new one, but my 2014 Atlas seems a big step up over my old a-stars brace.... design makes more sense to me, simpler, lighter, less intrusive

Didn't like the old design as it puts a sharp, hard plastic piece directly in the front inside. I badly cased a jump, the helmet got pushed up in the front by the brace as my head collapsed forward, and it knocked my lower 4 front teeth out when my face hit the inner lip... When I spoke to them afterwards they told me they were changing that part with the new design. I have switched since to the Leatt 5.5.

I have the new air and previously had the carbon. The new one is smaller all around then my old one both being mediums. I had a new air in large at the same time and the carbon medium was perfectly in the middle with size, compared to Both large and medium airs in overall dimensions. Weight seemed really close with the carbon but probably a hair lighter. Both are extremely comfortable and the air has six different size adjustments on the back flaps vs the carbons two. The air seemed closer to my chin which I didn't like but while riding I don't notice. If I was in that boat you are in, I would let price decide. If you can get the air and not have to eat ramen noodles for a month then I'd go for it.

On a side note I also bought their new chest protector and I am very happy with it. Fit and finish are great and it works great with both the old and new.

I have the original and I don't find it obtrusive at all, I don't even know I have it on, I have had one really bad crash where I was knocked out for a short time and broke my Bell helmet and my collar bone but I think it did it's job, how would you know? I just know that after seeing the helmet I was glad I was wearing all my gear.

I actually just re read my first post I worded it terribly. I actually already have a carbon, what I should be asking is if it is worth an upgrade, my carbon is perfect condition really I look after my stuff. From the side by side the main difference looks like it's at the back, the old one looks like the opening is huge

The air does add a touch more mobility. If you feel you need that then get it. Other wise you're just wasting money in my eyes. You can always try and sell the carbon or pay it forward and possibly save someone's neck you know like I did.
