Yz 125 won’t shift

Hey all! My buddy has a 2000 yz125 that shifts but won’t engage. I’m not sure if it has to do with the shifting mechanism or the clutch. I can physically shift it through all the gears, and say if I shifted into 4th, I can roll the bike and it acts like it’s in neutral. Id like to get opinions from you all before I tear into it. Thanks!

Only one sure way to find out and that’s to take it apart.
Obviously start with the clutch since it’s only about a 15 minute job to take it out.

I know they updated the shift fork in 07. I was told to put this in my 06 so I wouldn't have problems

When's the last time you changed the clutch plates? Sure the clutch isn't slipping.

Definitely clutch related. Easy fix. Replace all of the clutch parts while you’re in there. Will save you another tear down later on.

If it’s shifting through the gears it’s most likely not a shift fork. But your title says “YZ 125 won’t shift”..... you can shift through the gears without using the clutch. If it’s shifting, but not engaging properly, its probably clutch related. You have to take apart the clutch first anyways to split the cases and get to the tranny.
