What is the race or event that you are most proud of? Could be anything from racing moto to enduro or what ever.. I raced alot of moto over the years, but my favorite would have to be winning our class at the 06 Baja 500. It was just one of those days, the one where everything just goes perfect. Nothing was going to stop us. Haven't had a race like that since!
What was your favorite time?
(no Kawasaki, or Suzuki, team) six, 12, and 24 Hour GP series.
Jason Abbott, a Vital member, and Cycle news test rider, was part of the team.
Won the 125 Expert class in the 1999, 24 hour GP on a Stock XR100
Won the 40 Expert class, in the 2004, 24 hour GP
The Shop
I think it was in '98.
Held off Albertyn for 1 lap during a ride day at Unadilla. Yeah, it was after he retired, and yeah, he was cruising and I was at the 120% ragged edge... but still it is what it is! hehe
Every once in a while I can steal a moto from DrMArk who is one of the smoothest riding ex-pros you'll ever see. Has to be one of the fastest +50 riders in the country.
Holeshot and went wire to wire both motos in the 125C class at Sleepy Hollow, PA back in the day. I know, no big deal. But it was unreal to me at the time. Those C class races were mass carnage back then. And my girlfriend was there and I have it on video!
But really, my biggest accomplishments are not the results, but the cool places I've been and cool people I've got to ride with. And most of all, that fact that I've been doing this about 30 years and still love it and get to do it!
For me it was to be peruvian 125 champion in 1980.
Also third in south america in 1978.
That far outstrips anything I have ever done on a bike.
Pit Row
i had no idea what i was doing. i stuck some plastic handguards on my bike and rode it with the wide bars and mx gearing and suspension. i was the only bike on my row so i didn't have anyone to pace. i just pretended like i was riding with my friends and rode that pace.
after the race was completed, i went up to the scoring tent to see how i'd finished. i felt like i did okay, never crashed or stalled, no real problems. they had the score cards listed in order of finish. i started looking at about mid-pack but couldn't find my name. i looked back to last place but it wasn't there either. i thought maybe they lost my sheet. i finally found it. i had won! my times were good enough that i would've finished third in 40+b. i was really surprised. i never expected that. when they were handing out the awards, they said, "first place, jay bissell. the motocrosser."
that was in '01. to this day, that was the only official off-road race i've ever done.
1990 or 91, just squeaked top 10 in Dist 7 40plus.
I also met my wife of 13 years at that race.
Another one I'll always remember is practice day before the Pro Shootout in Tyler. KW just signed his Yamaha contract and was riding his new stock Yamis. He passed me and I passed him back in the next corner. We spent the rest of practice showing each other different lines around the track. I finally ran out of tear-offs and pulled off to clear my goggles. KW rode up to the top of the hill, looked back and gave me a thumbs up. He was definately faster but just the fact that he thought I was fast enough to play with was pretty cool.
I've raced for ten years and never had a serious injury.
Oh, and I ended up first overall in 30+ vet expert, what ever you want to call it.
