I throw the knobs off a Pirelli mid-soft quick but like the performance, heard they last longer with 13psi?

Dunlop 33 is my normal go to now that the 3S is gone.

Kenda Washougal III. I love it and they’re cheap.

I'm curious about this.. The Maxxis Maxxcross MX Soft (gasgas stock front), the Starcross 5 stoft, and the Pirelli Mid-Soft MX32 are all identical patterns. Has anyone used any of these to replace the others and noticed a difference? I think I don't like the Maxxis I have but it could also be suspension related as well.

Not a rear tire thread, but the Starcross 5 medium rear is incredible.
I ran the Maxxis MX ST on the front of my yz250 2 stroke and liked it. I haven't run it on my 450 but I run the pirelli mid soft and like that tire on any surface. A mate of mine who rides pretty hard ran the Maxxis front on his 22 CRF450 and he didn't like it, he said the side wall seemed to give to much and roll around. It could have been a pressure issue, I don't know what pressure he was running but I typically run around 14psi in the pirelli a they have a softer sidewall

I saw Keefers review in this tire, he seemed impressed. I'm going to try a few different tires in this offseason and this will be one of them

3S is still available. Been running them all year (except for the 53 incident...).

Pirelli is a fair bit wider in size 80/100 to 80/100. It works better in hardpack times with that.

I run 13.5 on my MX32’s, try going up on pressure next ride and it makes a noticeable difference.

If we have a “best all-time tire” list, that one has my vote.

Had a chance to buy about 15 ea front and rear after they discontinued them for 50/tire…kicked myself for only buying one of each.

Where’s a guy pick up some 756’s???
Not sure, but if you find some, they’re probably harder than the semi truck retread laying on the freeway…

Pirelli mx32 maximum lean angle traction just ok side bite on roots/when stood up. The more you lean it the more it hooks up. It is kind of scary and amazing at the same time. Mx53 awesome braking and pretty good lean angle traction. No side bite on roots. Starcross 6 midsoft is similar but probably better on looser soil. Starcross 5 soft - good lean angle and really good side bite on roots and when tire is stood up. Mx3s and mx33 both have good to great side bite when stood up. Mx33 doesn’t feel as stable as the 3s when laid over but it lasts at least twice as long. I think I like it better in the woods when it is half worn out.

I haven’t tried the m59 yet and I hear the x31 is similar but better and nearly twice the life. If the reviews are right I should be running these tires so I should probably try them.

For track I would rank them this way:
Pirelli mx32 midsoft
Starcross 6 (will outlast the Pirelli and maybe everything else)
Starcross 5 (best bump absorption)
Mx3s
Mx53
Mx33

If bump absorption is important move the sc5 to 2nd on that list.

For woods
Sc5
Pirelli
Mx3s (this is a 10-15 hour tire. Even the Pirelli lasts longer for me)
Mx33
Sc6 (this and the mx53 really skate on roots and wet rocks)

My local Dunlop dealer insists that any 3S available are “old stock” and that they are not in production anymore.

I didn’t believe the first 2 times I asked and the 3rd time I decided to believe it. So I’ve been mainly on 33’s in front since then.

I only know of 1 place that sells them and at the price point, I'd rather go with the pirelli mx32 or the bridgestone x20.

Love the hoosier fronts run the 25 for races and 30 for practice. Great grip, great front end feel, they do give the bike a plusher feel but...They do wear a bit faster then others. Best front tire if your a front end steering guy.

Dunlop MX3s. And yes, it’s still available. Dunlop reintroduced it over a year ago due to popular demand.

I dont get the fascination with MX3S… it’s vague at best. I just switched from a M59 bridgestone that had over 30 hours on it to a MX3S with 4 hours on it … if i wouldn’t have chucked the M59 i would put it back on.

I never liked the MX3S Dunlop or the MX32 mid soft Pirelli tire. They had a similar feel to me. I liked the MX32 mid hard Pirelli though. The MX33 works decent for me as an all around tire. I just wish they would bring back the 756RR front tire. After reading this thread I might have to give the M59 Bridgestone a whirl.

Starcross 5 Soft. The 33F just does not work for me - at all. Comparing the side knobs on the two, the Dunlop would look to have less bite when leaned over.

The bonus is the Michelin is a full 1 lb lighter than the Dunlop.

Guys that have switched from the Dunlop 3S/33 to the Pirelli, what was the most noticeable improvement?

Thinking about trying a set, but sometimes it's the devil you know...

You have to run higher pressure due to the softer side wall. Lean angle on the front tire is a lot better than the 33. Rear tire too. Front tire feels like it is on Velcro when you lean it over.

Unfortunately Michelin has discontinued the Starcross 5. When they are gone, they are gone.

Judging by the squeeze test at my local shop, the Starcross 6 seems to have a much stiffer sidewall than the 5. Does this mean the 6 gained weight? Anybody get one on a scale yet?

Sc6 is heavier but I don’t know by how much. The sidewall is a lot stiffer.

The Pirelli gives you a warning before you eat shit, the Dunlop gives no warning.

Nail, meet hammer. Exactly my experience. Wear is about the same. The Pirelli is lighter than the Dunlop. I run 14PSI almost everywhere with the Pirelli. It's just so predictable and confidence inspiring for me, although I did completely eat sh!t on one a few week back when I missed a rut and it went off the backside. Knocked me silly it happened so fast. Not really the tire's fault tho.
