Take that strategy and apply it to motocross bikes.
Get new people a brand new, great looking dirt bike, that looks just like the best of the best, for half the cost (or close to it...like $5k). That would get average joes into the sport.
Build what the public wants...not try to sell them what I want to build.
Almost every first gen rider got into the sport riding in the hills by their house...those areas need to stay open or nobody buys a new bike.
GPX 250 2-stroke - $4799
GPX 450F - $5499
SSR 300 - $4399
Funny this topic came up. I’m casually looking for a used CRF 150F or something similar for my wife and I came across the SSR 189 brand new for pretty much what used 10 year old + Honda’s and Yamahas go for. A little google research and it looks like these bikes are built better than the Chinese ones of the past (pit bike craze of the 00’s).
It got me thinking about this very subject, I wonder why these bikes aren’t pushed more as entry level options to the casual weekend warrior and trail rider.
pretty much what Yami are starting to do.
It’s an image thing...it’s gotta have the name brand and the look.
Gotta be able to walk into the Honda dealership, and see the $12k works edition, next to the standard F, next to a $5k bike. Consumer can take their pick...and rather than walk out with sticker shock, they walk out with a $5k bike.
Build brand loyalty and brand awareness by making mini bikes and making them very affordable and reliable. Getting the kids to love a brand is essential to keep it going. It need to be popular among the new generation... I would give toy companies free rights to plaster the brand name all over there toys, again to get the kids to beg mom n dad to have the brand.
A beginner level bike like PW or JR that can be controlled by smart phone just how fast it can go plus maybe emergency brakes to slow them down if needed.
A 50cc mini and pro 2T and electric all using the same frame and as many interchangeable compontents as possible.
A 65cc and 85cc with all the bells n whistles of the big boys bigs 2T and electric.
A 125cc 2T 250 4S and electric all built on the same platform.
A 250/300 2T 450 4s again sharing a base platform try and cut cost but not quality to get the savings to the customers..
I think KTM / Husky is building an amazing brand loyalty and contributes to their growing success not just because the bikes are good. Having an all orange grid at the base level is driving the next gen to want one as there next bike. now if they could get their price down like the weight of their bikes we'd see even more of them.
Now im a Suzuki guy through and through and would love to see them do just this as i need a new bike my RM 250 is getting old and i want a new 250 2T and my sone is 5 and they have nothing to offer that he could race so im going to have to jump ship....
Id involve the public like using forums like this one to see what the complaints are and strengths and build on that... Have public relations talk to the forums get and use the feedback.... Maybe let the public design some graphics and give the winner a bike.
Let ML and some selected others give them bikes to test all for free under the condition they have to have some sort of comp to give them away after the test. as much as possible to get the average joe back on the brand....
Suzuki never won with the strategy race sunday buy monday it never worked for them with RC or RD or Reed or or or ....
so time to think of new ways to make them good competitive and most of all cool and a must have item.
Even try a work edition but not half arsed but as close to what the factories run as possible.
Pit Row
Break from the AMA and form a race series where electric bikes can compete.
RIP Alta.
I’d even bring adventure bikes.
Yesterday, at Hollister Hills State State Park (California/Bay Area), I saw quite a few “families”. It was AWESOME! Mom & Dad and the kids. As I was leaving, an Audi SUV pulled in: Dad & Grampa taking the kids out and teaching them to ride on a brand new CRF50 and KLX 110: the CRF was in the back of the SUV & the 110 was on a bike carrier.
Those are 2 examples of who and how we get our sport back on track.
This thread is a great discussion.
why aren't these bigger sellers?
I agree with your position and I'm just taking a devil's advocate approach here. IMO it all comes down to marketing and brand perception. The Big 4 and of course KTM all sell "performance" machines. They want to promote what they race and that is the best of the best they offer. Little promotion and effort goes into the entry level bikes (CRF-F, TTRs, etc) compared the the MILLIONS they spend pushing the $10k race bikes.
