YZ450F 18 problems, already

Hi everyone,
We already ran 25 hours on our yz450f 2018 here, and spent more time wrenching than riding.
First, the design of the airbox is just a nightmare. In sand condition, you should have a Dyson in the van, remove the cage and change filter every 30 minutes. We changed for the twinair power flow kit, but it's not better.
So we had to change the cylinder and piston after 15 hours. Already $500.
Then we had problems with the starter. The stater ran 1 time on 10, we checked the starter and changed the part behind the cutch basket. Now it's ok... for 20 hours again? $600
Fuel pump was dead at 15 hours, impossible to start. There is no solution to change a filter or clean. $300
Front rim is like a 8.
Clutch faded in 10 hours.
Clutch basket had to changed at 20 hours.
Now the bike doesn't want start again, we changed the fuel pump and checked the valves but doesn't work.

Besides that, the bike is awesome to ride. The chassis and the power make a perfect match.

Do you guys have issues with this bike ?

Sounds like you need to be in front of everyone instead of taking everyone's roost! 25 hours of sucking dirt will do these things. whistling tongue

Do like mxa
Go up 2 teeth on the rear sprocket
Cures everything

What can be asserted without evidence can also be dismissed without evidence.

Hope the frame dont crack

Have you checked the torque on your sprockets? Most likely the cause of all your problems.

First year bikes always have problems.

Lots of useful advice in here...

OP, you'll probably have better luck in the 'Race Shop' section.

I have about 5 hours on mine. I definitely agree on the whole filter thing. I don't do much riding in sand but I stay up on my filter after every ride and change it if need be. I have had a few issues with the starter as well. After running for a while it was hard to start. I will be keeping a closer eye on things after your post. If there is indeed issues, I seriously doubt that Yamaha will step up due to the limited warranty

No need to be crude bro!! Prior to this I had a 2010 YZ 450 with well over 100 hours and never touched the valves nor did I ever do a top end on it and it ran like a scalded gorilla since day one. Yamaha for the most part have a history of being bulletproof. I have had Kawasaki, Suzuki and Honda before. The Honda was the only bike that I have had that floated a valve causing it to grenade!!! Yea thats right a Honda

Every brand is putting mass centralization elements in their bikes

Zero problem with mine so far. I like everything about the '18, especially the way it turns. Have had a bunch of YZ450fs over the years, and the '18 is far and away the best. Can't really compare it to other new 450s, but if ya "liked" prior YZ450fs you'll "love" the '18.

Guys are so helpful here. I mean douche bags.

Agreed on the air filter. Ran one sand race and realized that I better change it after every moto when I saw the build up on the filter and around it. I have switched to a Twin Air and feel better that at least it won't blow through the porous foam of the stock and GYTR filters....now I just need to buy 2 more!

My starter so far has been fine but I did have it once when it was hard to start. Was getting nothing when cranking over but didnt wind out the starter for more than 3 or 4 seconds either. Let it sit for 30 seconds and it fired right up. Vapor issues?

Thanks for posting your issues and I'll keep an eye out on that fuel pump.

That's a good question. Filter skins are awesome. Due to the air box placement, sand tracks have always been a pita on this design. 250 and 450f

...btw the starter issue is common with KTM's too. Just the pumpkin eaters that think they're made by God himself will argue this fact. That is why I like kick start...the new bikes are sooo easy to start hot or cold these days. In a few years the electric start gremlins will be worked out and be bulletproof.

can you run the pre filters in the shrouds like the 14-17? after i did that my filters stays very clean

You realize that KTM has had electric start since the early 2000s don't you? They had any bugs worked out long ago lol.

Since 2013...
KTM 450SXF
HUSKY FE350S
HUSKY FX350
HUSKY TE150

The closest thing I've had to a starter problem was on my FE...the harness got corroded due to the time I sunk it...in the ocean. I've never bought a new starter. Only the TE has a Kickstarter as back up.

The worst electric start systems I've had are:
2009 KLX450R
Any Year CRF450X

I ripped a start from Egypt and I was happy about that.
