I have a 2018 YZ250F. Those of you that have, or had a YZ250f, I was wondering what gearing changes you all have made to the bike? I was thinking about going with a 51T for a little extra hit out of the corners. Stock is 50T. I'll get a new front sprocket as well, but I'll stick with the stock 13T.

Assuming you're talking MX? It would be dependent on the track. Doesn't cost much to try it out to see if you like it. You can also fiddle with some gearing calculators if you want to check your speed in each gear to see how much the sprocket change would affect it.

So far i find the stock gearing on my 17 YZ250F pretty good for the riding i'm doing (High speed woods). When i need a new chain & sprockets I may stretch it but will decide after i try out some bar width trails this season. So far the factory set up seems pretty spot on for me.

This bike is leaps and bounds better than my 06 I used to have.

Gearcommander is a good site to see the difference.

Id suggest modding the motor for bottom end. At the place i ride at i find myself wringing it in 5th a lot

I prefer stock gearing or even one tooth down out back. Otherwise I feel like the bike is screaming in 3rd over smaller jumps. My buddy tried one up in the back and went right back to stock for the next ride.

I think k it's crazy when people say they can feel a difference with a single tooth on the rear. I went one tooth bigger on the front and it only dropped around 500 rpms in 5th gear...

I have hit 5th gear about a total of 2 times ever when I owned my 250f, but I am slow as hell.

I enjoyed the 1 up in the rear, you could use third in corners rather than 2nd with high RPM's.

OP- Do you know anyone with a tuner to adjust the mapping for you? Yamaha has a bunch of maps available depending on what you're looking for

When you say the bike is screaming in 3rd, are you saying that it is too fast, or are you talking about the RPMs?

That the bike is really high in the RPM range. To me, the newer 250F has plenty of low end and can pull the taller gearing. Plus I felt like with shorter gearing I would be in between gears for a lot of corners. Stock seems like a good balance all around and on the larger tracks one less tooth felt better. Like around Budds Creek I would prefer one tooth lower and on many flat tracks without elevation changes or long straights the stock gearing was on the money.

But that’s just like, my opinion, man.

I should add that I don’t own one of these bikes, I just ride friends bikes. It’s been a while since I had my own 250F.

I went a tooth down to 49 on my yz250f and I like it better. I can actually use second gear now in tight corners and I don't have to shift as often into forth on straights because third is more usable.

My son likes either the stock 50 or a 51 on his. One of the kids I help likes a 49 on the same bike. Rider preference.

On a stock 250f I prefer 51 in the sand and 50 on hardpack tracks. On my racebike I ride with 49 in the sand, probably 48 on hardpack tracks but didnt test that yet.
