Hello. I have a very weird problem with my bike, yz250f 2016. A lot of times when i downshift from 3rd to 2nd, it goes straight to neutral and If i downshift again i hit 1st, so its the "true" neutral. I have changed the 3rd-5th shift fork because it was very worn out, and the 3rd gear cause it had some marks, the rest of the tranny looked very good. But it didnt help. Then i changed the 2 metal pawls(no5) that sit on the star shaped segment (no1), on the shifter assembly, clutch side. After that it became less frequent so i decided to also change the segment(no1). Now it became worse thatn before i change the segment. I cant really figure whats happening. I dont have any other problem with my tranny, it shifts perfect in general, except this weird thing.

I am thinking about replacing the shifter stopper lever(no12) and its spring(13),also shifter spring.

I have a '19 WR250F (that is the same gen motor as your 16 YZ) and I'm experiencing the same issue. It started at around 150 hours on bike for me, I now have 210 hours on it. For me, I've been able to figure out it only occurs when hitting the lever hard (mashing a downshift in air for example) and while it is most prevalent in the downshift from 3rd, it occasionally does it on other downshifts or upshifts (skips a gear, essentially shifting twice). Depressing the shift lever in a lighter manor seems to keep the shifting acting fine. I've reached the same conclusion you have; that it is either the shift stopper lever, worn segment, or combination of both. I have not replaced any components yet, trying to do it in a few weeks will I have the motor out for a top end and inspection.

My klx110L does this too. New stopper and spring should help. Or just downshift really soft.

This was a common problem on the 2007 RMZ250, I think people were replacing, '5' from that diagram, with stiffer springs, or adding preload to them somehow.

Mike, same troubles w a 01 yz 250. The shift forks were rounded off where the end pins go into the shift barrel. They were slipping out and causing havoc.

This is most likely the issue. Shift fork is wore out
