I’m looking to build my son a supermini from his 2019 yz85. Anyone build one and could steer me in the right direction? Thanks.

Get the Tusk wheel set from RMATV. Buy the swing arm directly from Yamaha. They sell it on their website. Maybe local shop for engine ?

Does anyone make a swingarm kit like that for a 2002 yz85?

Is tusk worth a damn? I heard bad, scary things. But I’ve had a set on a 2 stroke build and they seemed ok but I think people are a little harder on wheels then me.

I used the tusk wheelset on a couple bikes, it was in the early years. I always broke a spoke or two, but i rode the crap out if them.

i think your kid will be fine, just look them over really good, make sure you keep an eye on spokes after riding a couple times.

I’ve had a Tusk set on a yz for about 90hrs. Won on overall A title on them. They have been much stronger than the stock rims.

Can’t say the same for many other Tusk parts, but the wheels are solid.

If you're breaking spokes they are too tight. They need to be able to flex. A good starting point for spoke torque is 20-25 inch pounds, I never go above 30.

Use Dean at R&D racing for the motor, he worked tirelessly with Doug Dubach and his son Carter to perfect it. I have a mod 85 done by him and it's super strong, pulls up Glen Helen hills very well.

Dean can do no wrong on a Supermini..... I'd put his engine work up against anyone.

I don't understand the swingarm and wheels comments, is yamaha not producing the big wheels anymore in the US ?

I am just wondering, because at $600+ the swingarm and probably $800+ the set of wheels, plus probably more than 1000-1400 for the 112 kit and parts required, it is better to buy a supermini from LL directly and have a spare bike. And anyway it is quite necessary to have a spare bike in this category, 1 bike for practice, 1 bike for racing, as 1 bike always needs something to be replaced.

I had a YZ supermini built back in the day. We used the stock hubs and used excel rims. The swingarm you have to get through Yamaha. We had a 112cc motor built by Tom Morgan. That motor was the best running bike I ever had. Tom is the man when it comes to two-strokes.

I kept stock wheels on mine back in the day. WMR in florida did my motor for me. That thing was rocket.

Pro Circuit built our YZ 112. Bike was reliable fast and expensive. Never regretted their work. They were there for Support at Daytona, Loretta’s and Mini O’s as well. Made sure the bike was jetted correctly and ready to race. Have them do the motor work and then spend the rest of your time working with your kid on technique to make him faster. There’s only so much the bike can do.

dude the guy with the pro circuit yz112 is right if they are at the races for the support, its a pretty smart move, but idk...

if your good with motors you might not even have to worry about the support stuff.

Fun read and it looks like the questions are pretty well answered...

So I'll just add that in my day, there was only 1 supermini to ride and it was a lot more difficult to build than one of these YZ supermini's. So build that YZ and show it off!

I have a mint set of OEM 16/19" wheels for sale cheap. where at in Canada are you? Also I can tell you how to extend the swing arm. The OEM one is big bucks. FYI you CAN run these wheels with a stock swinger if you adjust the chain so the axle is all of the way back. For the 112 kit you will need to get the cases cut (barely) for the stroker con rod. Just get an athena and you can grind the clearance yourself.

My Boy is racing a 19 YZ85 55hrs on it and its holding up really well. I was also looking into the super mini route, going to have to sell the blue bike, and buy one of the Orange bikes, eventually when he makes the move up to supermini. To costly to convert the YZ

Yamaha make the bike ready for the next level, we don't want to divorce in the middle of a fresh relationship, haha. please we like the brand!

make the swing arm supermini ready, then offer a GYTR package with a top end and a set of wheels for a grand or so, and I'm sold.

Honestly, you won;t regret it. The 18+ KTM engine is pretty much the best mini engine to date. The 105 kit is icing on the cake. I really wanted the Yamaha to kill it but it just didn't happen. They missed the mark on the "upgrade"...............and I am not KTM fanboy by any means but they are worlds ahead in the 65/85/125 game........

Contact Rock River Yamaha. Last time I was there, they had several used swingarms for sale that they pulled off of team bikes.

My kid is on the Husky 85 and I've been debating the next step. He has another year left in the class. I'm debating if we should convert it to a supermini or just go to a 125.

RM85 wheels bolt right up if you use the YZ spacers. The 05+ RM rear disk was a larger diameter, while the earlier ones were the same size as the YZ's.

Built my own 1" longer using a $35 ebay swing arm for material. Used tusk rims and their oversized spokes by drilling out stock hubs. This bike worked great with a heavier rear spring.

If it's an 18+ the bolt on 105 kit is a hoot. Just a few tweaks and it rips. My youngest is 14 & around 130lbs and riding both a TC105 & a TC125. He loves the 105 and will be sad once he truly outgrows it. It's been a great stepping stone to big bikes for him.
If you have a 17- older Husky 85 I would go straight to 125's. The older 105 wasn't a very good design...............

And make sure the threads are not corroded. That will throw off your reading.

Supermini's were the biggest financial mistake our our moto lives and now in our district, they dont even run them anymore! Unless your bent on running for Loretta's, Mini O's ect. Just go 85 to 125. Lots of moto dads in our area built them to show off (Our KTM made almost 31HP 😮). The kids grow so fast in that age group that it's just money out the window, or save money by racing a new KX100 if for some reason you want to race that class imop 😉!

So if I go the 112 route, what gearing did everyone run?
I think we went up two on the rear
