Wrist breaks and wrist braces?

Edited Date/Time 1/26/2012 8:32pm
I am just now getting back on the bike after being out one year due to a sever wrist break, I have about 9% upward motion and 80% downward maybe 4-5% side to side, once I meet the maximums there is some pain. While riding if I hit square edged bumps my hand almost lets go (hasn't happened yet knock on wood) and doesn't feel good by any means. So if you have had similar situations and have used a wrist brace or have any other suggestions that might be helpful it would be greatly appreciated.

More Rehab is my suggestion. If you do not have your strength and flexibility back I would work hard on that and take it easy for a while on the bike.

OMG! Sorry to hear that. Duct tape your hands to the bars...Wow, that is rough. Good luck, man.

Yeah I don't plan on jumping anything yet, just working on corners and having fun I would just like to hear if anyone has any tips on rehab. I can't afford therapy.

Yeah it sounds like you need more physical therapy to get your movement back. I've broke both of my wrists a lot of times! Pain in the ass but nothing is worse than the ruptured disc in the lower back!!

Last time I broke my wrist it took a while to get strong again. Didn't really ride much cause I hate that sharp stinging feeling from every little bump.

Agreed. I had a collies fracture with Pins sticking out out of my wrist. Took a long time to get full motion back. It still hurts when the weather changes.

Keep working corners and don't do anything you think you can't handle. No use in getting injured again because of this injury. Hurt yourself for another reason Smile

Hope you get better.

8 months immobile with a pin through each side and 8in plate fusing my wrist solid, I had 2 surgeries total and have been metal free since Feb, for more info I broke and shattered my Radius and broke my ulna in 2 spots along with dislocation. I'd post a pic but most prolly wouldn't like to see it

Heya, when you get better you may want to check out some braces...I have wrist issues too and I use the EVS wrist brace.

I am looking at the advantages of this now:

I as well was off the bike for a year due to a wrist break. I ended up with 17 screws and three plates in my distal radius/ulna right above my wrist. They had me in PT twice a week for months! I wasnt really gaining any thing from it., I bought the CTI OTS crabon brace and love it. It comes with many differnt adjustments to fit your needs. I think riding has really helped with my range of motion, just recently my wrist is starting to loosin up a lot more and gain a little bit more of motion back.

I have the OTS brace. It's awesome. Contact Allsport Dynamics for info on getting your doctor to prescribe one for you. I got mine through my medical insurance (doctor stated it was needed for rehab)... $40 co-pay instead of the $300 retail price.

I notice it a little bit if it's cinched too tight. Otherwise, not at all.

At the end of the 2001 season I had a bad first turn crash that resulted in, among other injuries, a wrist that sounds to be a little worse than yours in regard to range of motion. At least it was my left wrist. Permanent partial disability. My surgeon said it was probably the worst he'd seen. Compared my wrist bones to crushed glass.

Anyway, I was off the bike for almost 2 years before I started to ride easy again. Problem was, the wrist was very weak and even little bumps made it hurt like hell. My wife knew I wanted to ride really bad but the pain was really getting me down and I figured I'd have to hang up the boots for good.

One day she came home with a white, lace-up style wrist brace she saw at the pharmacy and was really excited for me to try it. Let's just say I was really skeptical. Oh, by the way, it was called a "Cock-up Wrist Brace" LOL!

So, desperate to find something that worked, I tried it. Holy cow, it actually worked! It supported my weak wrist and because it was nice and snug, the small and medium sized bumps, jumps, etc barely hurt.

Looooong story short, in time my wrist strengthened and the pain became less and less to the point that only hard impacts like really over-jumping or casing jumps made my eyes water from pain.

Eventually got back to racing but was really concerned about crashing and breaking the wrist again because my surgeon warned that if I break it again... well, things would get pretty ugly.

Today, I still ride with the Cock-Up brace on my wrist, then put on my gloves, then wear the Allsport Dynamics brace on top to prevent my hand from flexing back. Works well for me and I've had a couple of really hard get offs where I thought I broke the wrist again... but all was well. Hope this helps you.

Good to hear I thought of a off the self brace like you mentioned but was skeptical of how it would perform as well. It sounds like were in the same boat with the break, I went to a wrist specialist who has done nothing but wrist surgeries for 26 years and he said mine was by far the worst break he has ever seen and compared my bones to mush (said he took a chunk of bone and pushed all the mush together and put a pin through it one the one side and prayed). I will probably go pick one up tonight from the store tonight for as it feels like if something was squeezing my wrist I would be fine, thanks!

For the left side, you can use a bowlers brace. For the right side....you have to work it until it is strong enough. That one is the deal killer. I got cortisone shots for years - right into the joint. That is a miracle!

Either way, I could not have continued riding without Fasstco Flexbars. It will save you in so many ways. The cost has been offset so many times.

hey Honda I had broken both my wrists back in 2001 the left worse than the right. After 3 surgeries i started riding on mellow tracks. But that brace that mxeditor posted a pic of by evs works real well I used it for over a year.

Sounds funny but bowling is good for strengthening your wrist.
