Sorry, off season boredom.......

Anyway, what's the worst moto item you've ever purchased? Bike parts, gear, pit goodie?

Mine was a pair of MXL boots. Poor man's Scott boots. Turned out to be some weird hybrid between ski boots and a cast for a broken lower leg cast. I would have been better off to have ridden in combat boots and soccer shinguards and then burned the rest of the cash.

I bought a kidney belt to try out after years of riding without and couldn't stand it. I tossed it after 2 laps.

2009 Honda CRF450R. Was the biggest pile of shit I had ever owned. i know it isn't an accesory but all the problems I had with mine it should count as a giant door stop! so I figure that it was an accesory to my shop instead!!

Lever skins. Anybody remember those? You put them on your lever and then use a hair dryer so they shrink to size? Yeah, totally pointless.

Late 80's-early 90's.....the cool thing to do was run a different colored plastic guard on every piece of the bike. Looking back it was dumb as hell.

The new gas cans that you have to hold the nozzle in to use. I might as well wash my bike with gasoline. Spill proof, Ha.

Good stuff gang. Keep 'em coming. This will probably make for some good market research for someone thinking about bringing something to market. There isn't much that hasn't been tried.....

Love the new gas cans. Evidently thought up by some bureaucrat that never poured gas from a can in his life. I'm still using an old can from about 15 years ago that has a Redline BMX grip shoved over the spout tip to seal it off.

1. SHIFT pants.
My wife and kids bought me a Father's Day set of SHIFT gloves, jersey and pants.
Wore and washed them three times max and the pants fabric pulled out of the sewn seams, looking all frayed.
No, they weren't to tight!Tongue

2. Tech 8 boots (soles)

I bought a Dyno-Port pipe for my 89 YZ125. Worst piece of crap ever. The pipe would not even bolt on without rigging the hell out of it. Once I did get it on the bike ran like total crap. Worst $100 I ever spent on a bike.

Close #2 was the Answer Roost Boost. This $100 gimmick did absolutely nothing as far as I could tell. Total waste of money.

#1 not sure who made them but in the late 80's i had a pair off goggles with the automatic roll off system. It had an electric motor with a sensor that when you waved your hand in front of it the motor would advance the roll. junk! never worked right.

#2 those stupid levers that had the bend in them for only 2 fingers. brake and clutch, my fat fingers would not fit in them.

PC Racing Pro-Seal, the neoprene gasket for your air filter. Waste of money.

Alpinestars boots... soles are made of butter.

7/8" handlebars. Bend too easy.

91 KX125.. thing ate pistons and cranks for lunch.

The 1st generation STOMP grip. Horrible...it wouldn't stick and come off after a couple rides when dirt and water got underneath. For grip it was great...if it actually stuck to the bike! Friends would make fun of me all the time, saying I was gay for having "french ticklers" on my bike Tongue

Smith roll off's when they first came out, total garbage. More recently, picked up an MSR Triangle stand and it's worthless. It's too short for the bikes and they have fallen over twice, second and last time bent my ASV clutch lever. Tossed the stand in the scrap bin and borrowed a stock steel one from a buddy for my Yamahas.

I was one of the last hold outs for racng CZ's. In '76 I was on my third 400, a red frame air shock beast. I had lengthend the front dampening rod for an additional 3/4" travel and scored these one-off air reservoirs from Pat Richter's Falta. These air nozle topped eye daggers stuck up 6" and above the cross bar when attached to the fork caps. They were meant to increase air capaicty as to not build pressure through a moto. They may have had some effect, but the first time you'd wad you snapped them off and then had to rebuild. Later that year I had Stormey Winters (one of Mike Kid's Championship mechanic) move up and laydown those air shocks for 12"+ travel. Although in true Stormey fashion the work was art, I would spend the rest of the year chasing after shock/springs that could support doubling that leverage. By then of course I bagged the front system and put on a set of leading axle Marzocchis and a bitchin aluminum (sprung) chain tensioner/stay that came apart every ride and did little to settle chain slap. Complementing the set up was that one of a kind Barum wrap around front knob that only assisted in climbing out of the ruts you wanted to stay in. I also had to have the Hallman visor with the rearview mirrors just so I could keep an eye on those new Jap bikes I was sure to pull a lead on. I could go on about the snake pipe but that's another story....ah' the golden era of moto.

Original Roll Offs ( 1985 ) complete and utter shite, threw 'em away after 2 months and went back to tear offs.

Answer gear, 1989, luckily I got a deal but the shit faded before your eyes and the jersey would rip just for the hell of it.

Oakley face masks, 1986'ish , were made of some weird super brittle material and would crack & split from the nose bridge down then fall in half , went through 6 before I finally threw that crap out and went to Scott.

Alpinestars -late '80's early '90's. Awesome boots just sucked the sole would wear out before the boots even lost their new smell.

Mine was a Hallman Vertabelt (it was made in the 80's); a combo kidney belt/back support. Good idea, can't say it was executed well IMO...

I agree. I broke more than one shifter and stalled plenty because of those ridiculous boots. I was exactly like trying to ride with ski boots on.

93 YZ 125, slowest 125 EVER made. Still have it in my garage. My son got off his 09 KTM 65 and rode the 125 in my field, came back and said "this thing is slow"

Alpine star boots. My tech 5s and son's youth Tech 6's. Mine lasted about 2 months (soles, clean through), his lasted for 3 months (soles), after 3 pair in less than 8 months, switched to Fox Comp 5's (so far lasted over a year)

Any new part from DG. The stuff they are selling today is total garbage, and if you send it back it'll take you 3 months to get your money back.

My dad put a Roost Boost on his '87 CR 250....which did nothing. I saved money to get the first HRP Clear Chest Protector in 1990 that was brittle and had sharp edges.

Here are a few things that come to mind:
Scott Electronic Film System...cool idea that didn't work...maybe it could be revisited?
Vents Goggles...never tried them.
Thor had a chest protector and Kidney Belt that pumped up like Reeboks in about '93.
O'neal Pro Style levers...had them on my RM 80....worked fine but didn't do anything.
Fox Chameleon Boots...another idea that I think was cool but didn't catch on.
Sidi Royal and Tracker Boots....had 47 small suction cup looking knobs on the insides of them...sort of a stomp grip idea on your boots....They stuck to the sides of my KX 80 and I couldn't move.
Scott Sticky Fingers.....colorful grippy adhesives for your levers...looked cool but wore out fast.
Troy Lee Nascar visor...had one on a painted Shoei in '92....never caught on...I might of had the only one they sold.
Jt Flexon gloves had a windshield wiper attatchment that went on a finger of your glove to wipe your goggles off.
O'neal SDS...this was made by UFO but it was cooler than the AXO Pentagon because you could completely reconfigure your chest protector without any tools. And it made it fun to mix up colors and pieces.
Yoko Jersey with built in external foam elbow and shoulder pads. Gloves and Jerseys were way more protective in the late 80's than now.

O'neal IFS Bars. 7/8 bar without a crossbar. Double wall tubing at the mounting area. Broke.

Yoko and HRP Pants with built in kidney belts.

You don't have to describe it. Everybody here that's ever seen somebody with those pants on, knows exactly how stupid you looked.
