Wilson and knee braces

Edited Date/Time 1/30/2016 6:31pm
Is it possible that Wilson was not wearing knee braces when he crashed? If he was wearing knee braces, aren't they supposed to prevent torn ACLs and similar internal knee injuries? If he was wearing them, I wonder what brand he had on. I wonder how many of the guys out there riding Supercross do not wear some type of knee protection?

If the knee was bent the brace doesn't stop rotation of the lower leg, pop.

A brace,to me,is for side impacts over extension and such. Like getting caught under the bar in a slide out.

RV was wearing braces when he messed up his knee in Seattle that year(2013?). I know Albertson doesn't wear braces, he still wears a knee pad. Idk about other guys though

Whats funny is that I saw Mobius knee brace ads to the right hand side of this screen welcoming Wilson to the team and like the same day he blew his knee out. Bad timing.

Wilson was wearing knee braces and so was RV when he injured his knee. They're preventive protection but they aren't guaranteed to stop your knee ligaments from tearing. Depending upon how you've caught your leg in a crash, they may not help for certain movements or extensions/twisting.

I think it's always a toss up with Knee braces anyway, much like neck braces. I know they do help in certain situations, but your body is supposed to move and bend in a certain way. Making it so your knee can't move in a usual way can lead to injury in a different way when you might not necessarily have been injured at all had you not been wearing braces

Most people think it's dorky I guess, but the Asterisk anti rotation tether is designed to stop that twist. When I first started wearing them I didn't use the tethers. A couple rides in and I twisted the knee and and aggravated the same mcl that caused me to buy the braces. Attached the tethers and about 10 years later I haven't had an issue. No one has the tethers. When it happens you can feel the torque transfer to you hip joint, as designed. Of course the braces need to be worn as tight as possible too. But like Hillbilly said your knee will still torque in the wrong direction with a brace. I believe the tethers on the asterisk stop that.

When I was 17 I didn't wear knee braces - just pads.

Managed to crash hard enough to dislocate my knee completely. My lower and upper leg were no longer connected other than soft tissue. Severed one of the two main arteries that pass by the knee, and did massive nerve damage.

Luckily for me I didn't bleed out and depending if the dr that was religious or not, I was just plain luckily or if was religious had some divine intervention to not bleed out in time to get medical attention.

Even luckier, after a few initial consultations saying walking again properly was very unlikely, we found a dr who was more optimistic.

1 year later, lots of rehab I was basically back to half ass running, and a fairly solid activity level. I was very athletic sports wise prior the injury - which dropped about 40 percent - but still quite decent all things considered - I CAN run, play non competitive basketball or football etc... and ride no problem

However the knee isn't even close to correct - I've had follow up surgeries to try to fix it that have been wastes, and it is getting progressively worse....

On one hand it doesn't hurt much which is nice - but only because the nerve damage prevents much feeling. I can not feel the front side of my leg from the knee cap down...and much of the sides etc...
Somehow when it healed I got tons of scar tissue on my hamstring - can't even come close to touching my toes on that side - have tried and tried to solve that...

Moral is - I'd have taken the femur breakage any day or tib fib. I wear braces now not expecting them to prevent ligament issue - but I believe whole heartedly there is NO way my knee could have moved as far as it did to do all that damage. So choose what you want - but I wouldn't wish my injury on anyone.

Good news is I made it back to riding and while my knee sucks big time - maybe in this lifetime they will grow new legs and such..

There aren't any kneebraces in the world that will eliminate knee injuries. That is the rule number 1 when it comes to kneebraces, just because a rider wears a properly fitted brace is absolutely no guarantee that there will not be any injuries. They are there to prevent injuries from small dabs and tweaks or to stabilize an already injured knee.

As a rider with current acl and mcl issues I can tell you that braces do not help knee issues unless 100 percent healed. I currently ride with a medical type support brace on my left leg and an Asterisk Ultra Cell on my right because I can't get the needed support on my left with a moto style brace yet.

The basic off the shelf brace will give you some support to your knee but will not prevent injury. The best bet for injury protection is a prescription custom made brace CTi and DonJoy even offer to pay for part of your surgery if you tear an ACL, PCL or MCL using one of there custom prescription braces.

Mr. Common Sense: Knee braces can't protect against every possible injury.
Pro Rider: I understand but I think I'll wear them just in case. Knee injuries suck.

Mr. Common Sense: Chest protectors can't protect against every possible injury.
Pro Rider: Screw that! I bet my vital organs will be just fine on their own.

Does anyone know for a fact how Wilson injured his knee? Did he crash or just twist it in a corner? I seem to have heard both.

He crashed at A2 in the section before the left hander in front of the finish line. I was standing next to the start straight and saw him down. It was so sad to see because he knew he was hurt right away. Wish the best for him and his recovery. Good family.

2012. The was the night that Short won and Roczen got 2nd while moonlighting the 450 class. Villopoto missed the Outdoors and Dungey got that title.
