This may be a stupid question, but will I ruin my motocross tires if I ride on the road for about 10 kilometers (or 6 miles)? I'm looking to get to this trail near my house, which is only a 10km round trip from my house. I just don't think its worth it to load up the truck just to drive 5km (3 miles) back and forth. Thanks in advance for any help!

Are you running DOT tires? Those will help. Think Kenda Trackmaster.

They're just regular MX only tires. Its the Pirelli Scorpion MX32 (soft compound).

It’ll certainly wear them down riding 12 total miles of blacktop.

It's 6 miles in total (3 miles each way). That being said, I probably ride on the gravel shoulder for 2 miles, so I'm probably only going to be on the blacktop for 4 miles in total.

It’ll wear them down enough to notice it on dirt

Oops, sorry I misread that apparently. But still 6 miles is far. To do it once may not be a huge deal. But if you like the trail, which is by your house, then you’ll want to do it more and you’re gonna have to figure something out. Either get a DOT approved tire (which may be kind of hard since I assume you have a 19 inch rear wheel. If you have an 18 it won’t be too difficult. I’ve honestly never researched DOT approved tires for 19’s so someone else will have to chime in) or you’ll want to haul it.

Yikes, that scares me a bit. I didn't know it cause the much of a difference. If I go slow on the black top (I'm talking 10 mph - 15 mph) will it reduce the wear a little bit?

Yeah, its only a one time thing. I just want to go on one last ride before I park my bike for the winter, since its getting cold up here in Canada. If I do notice a lot of wear, I'll probably just change my tires before I get my bike out again next year. The tires have about 35 hours on them, so I should change them anyways.

Yes going slower is better. I wouldn’t worry about it. It will be worth it to be able to ride to the trails. Just be careful.

It will not wear them out that bad. I run a bunch of dual sports and have never used a DOT tire in my life, some days are 20+ miles on blacktop. Just stay off the throttle and don't worry about it.

If it’s your last ride for the winter let her rip then. You got some time to save and buy new tires

If you’ve got 35 hours on them to begin with, you’ll be fine

I've got literally thousands of miles on pavement...on knobbies (Been riding The Rip to Cabo since 2009) and plenty of dual-sport rides...etc... on MX tires. From the old MX71s to the Pirelli 32 Softs that you're running. Alllll sorts of tires...

If you take it really easy on the pavement? You will be fine.

Have a great ride!

I've put about 200 blacktop miles on my current rear tire, as long as you don't get dumb with burnouts you won't be able to tell any difference in 6 miles. Never had DOT knobbies and have never had an issue. I've ran Bridgestone, Dunlop, Michelin, Kenda, motorsport house brand, and tusk tires with some blacktop riding on every one. The local MX track is just as hard as pavement anyway.

I haven’t been riding much hard pack lately. My MX32 rear has about 20 hours on it and looks great. I’m sure the carcass is soft now though.

You’ll be fine. Just don’t pin it on the black stuff.

Sounds like you're gonna do it anyway man, so just do it. I'd be more worried about the 5-0 rolling by and confiscating my (offroad) bike, but I guess that's not a factor up in Canada?

Either way, like has been said, go steady on the tarmac and it should be fine.

No. It can't be worst than when I raced a legendary Finnish winter enduro "Päijänne-ajo" race with spike tires. Between special stages I rode around 300 miles on the tarmac with the spikes and they held up really nice. So no worries with normal tires unless you want to really shred on the tarmac.

6miles on pavement? Big freaking deal. Keep the speeds/heat down and you will never notice the wear.
