Will AC Try It Again?

So, there is no question but that Jeffrey Herlings is quite possibly the FMOTP, or at least on the Grand Prix World Championship series this year. Amazingly, multi-time Champion Tony Cairoli has had to play second fiddle to Herlings at a great number of rounds so far...and if that keeps on, we’ll see a new 2018 World Champion.

My question is this...if Herlings proves victorious this year, do you see Cairoli giving it another go to steal the #1 plate in 2019, or ride off in the sunset like Ryan Dungey with his youth, his beautiful wife & his money?

Any attempt to come back and take the title will be relying on the "hope" that herlings takes himself out. Cairoli is an amazing rider and has done great things in his years but father time is undefeated.. (and Herlings may be for the next 5 years too)

It's actually quite possible that's what the contract is, there's so many clauses plus ins-and-outs of these things that aren't announced in the headline.

There is a still good chance Herlings gets hurt in the next couple of years and Toni can get his 10th. Even this year Herlings got hurt at a good time for him. If he breaks his collarbone earlier before Matterly let's say it's a different ball game. But he broke it and only missed one race instead of potentially three. Reed won the biggest title in the game by someone else getting hurt, twice. AC could too its not like the rest of the field has much for him. Gasjer 100% would be the only guy to get in there but his sand riding needs work and he crashes too much.

I sure hope he comes back, but even the best slow down and yield the right of passage to someone else. This case it is Herlings.

The funny thing is that Cairoli is actually having a pretty good season. He's beating everyone not named herlings by far.
Take away herlings and people would say Cairoli is faster than tomac Blink

This is my guess.

He tries one more year. He does everything he can in the off season to be 100% ready to fight Herlings in 2019 and take back the title. Then he retires after 2019 regardless of the results that season. There is no way that he races in 2020.

It's incredible how far the gap is from Herlings to Cairoli now. And even crazier to think that nobody else is even touching Cairoli. This year has been the passing of the torch. Herlings is up 36 points and even missed a round completely. Just as long as he stays healthy, but there's only 5 races left.

Funny enough he said recently in an interview that he will train harder this off season to go for the championship in 2019
It almost sounded like he had given up this year.

Cairoli already signed for another 2 years. What he is doing deserves great credit and respect. He's making Herlings go out and win it. He could have retired last year and gone out as a champion having beaten Herlings. But no, he wants that 10th title and he wants to win it straight up against Herlings. It looks like it's going to be very tough for him to do that, but many thought that he was done and wouldn't win again after Febvre and Gajser won in 15 and 16, but he went away and worked and came and won it back. Even if he never wins a 10th world title, he deserves great credit for not just taking the easy way out and handing it all over

This ... with the best race craft in the world.... just imagine if herlings wasn’t there.... he could have several more world titles

You know what's ironic here? It's that Cairoli is clearly faster than anyone else in MXGP -- it's not close -- and probably faster than anyone in the AMA series. Age notwithstanding, I don't think he needs to retire simply because there's one injury-prone guy who is simply unbeatable on even terms. If that's the case, why doesn't everyone else retire too?

I say AC has a chance for 1 more. No way herlings can win 18,19, and 2020 without injury. I mean it’s possible but I’m goin go with no way giving his track record.

That still pays REALLY well and I'm sure he'll keep winning races...which also pays well.

But is he willing to get the 2nd-5th every race with a win here or there whilst Herlings is dominating? Is he willing to "only" wait for a mistake from Herlings that sidelines him for multiple races or a whole season?

I mean AC is a proud guy, rightfully so. He is one of the greatest ever in our sport.

Teams have two riders in case one gets hurt. Who else could KTM realistically hire who could win the title should Herlings drop out due to injury?

Jonass is moving up next year. I don't think he'll be a 450 champ anytime soon but i can see him as a top 5 rider.

AC is making Herlings win it... rather than gifting it to him, as seems to be the norm in the US.. and if he finishes 2nd for the next 3 years , he is still the best of the rest, by a long long way. His hand injury, i think, is more of a hinderance than Herlings Collarbone.
