I don't know what happens, it's like I fall apart on race day
Here's an example
At my local track I can put down an average of 1:30 ( for comparison the fastest lap ever turned was a 1:24) but on race day I'm lap times are going into the 1:40s.

Does this happen to anyone else? If so how did you fix it?

Well lap times between practice and race day really can't compare. The prep will make a big change in times.

Not breathing? Pumping up? Following slower riders instead of making passes? and as others have said, the track is probably rougher on race day

During practice you are racing the track. During the race you are racing riders. Just race the track.

I was the same way, practice hero and mid pack in the race. I always ended up not breathing and riding tight, too worried about making mistakes instead of charging forward the way I rode in practice.

Umm... tracks get beaten and are much rougher on race day than practices.

I agree, I have choked at more races than I have done good. What I figured out is I need to care less on race day. Seems weird, but it takes pressure off and I perform better(still choke occasionally). Tell yourself to ride the track and have fun.

My friend told me a few weeks afo he doesn't understand why we ride close together in practice but he's nowhere close in a race.

I think of two things....one: I can try to run a race pace in practice and I can't. I really need the gate drop and first turn intensity to realy get me going.and two: I think a lot of people are like that. They don't really blister practice but really find speed when they're racing....

My little brother rides really good in practice and then when he races I don't even think he looks like the same kid. Just all the fundamentals out the window, sloppy eveeywhere. Looks like he's fighting the bike, I think that's just confidence, racing more should fix that.

You worry too much.

Try to adopt a bit more of a I don't give a fuck attitude.
Win, lose, whatever, you'll be there mixing it up, and be back again at the next round.
That's what really counts.

That is a big difference in your times. I would tell you the only way to go fast is to be completely relaxed. Getting relaxed can be hard on race day. Can you be in race mode on practice day? what happens to your lap times then?

this ^^^^ and I will add we can get faster quicker than we can heal. Focus on having fun first and the results will follow.

Exactly! My best riding is when I'm hanging it out because I'm having a blast. Not cause I'm worried about being passed!
