I agree DMG, that was a great era. There have also been some dominate guys recently too. RC and Stewart were amazing. Also Alessi was pretty dominate on minis, but his rivals RV and Millsaps have had more success as pros.

I've seen a lot of the greats at one time or another on 80's but for me none were faster than Erik Kehoe and George Holland.

I seen those two battle at Gatorback in 1988, that was the fastest I had ever seen anyone ride a 125 up to that point.

Kehoe and Holland one of the best, and longest rivalries in MX history.

In 1974, I thought Bobby Jones was the shit on his Hacienda Honda XR-75; Mike Brown on a YZ80A was right behind him.
In 1975, I thought Bryan Myerscough was the man.
In 1976, I thought Jeff Ward was God.
In 1977, I thought Scott Burnworth was buttery.
In 1978, I thought Erik Kehoe was the second coming.
It's all relative to the specific year. There's always a "next one up."

Reynard and Lusk had some memorable battles in the very early 90's....Windham in there too.
Bogard and Carmichael put on some epic battles in the early 90's on minis. Lost in the shuffle was usually Partridge and Sellards and Perolio. All very fast kids in those days.
Also, Marley, Buckelew, and Martin were always fast at Ponca City a few years later.

Fastest mini rider of all time though? It's an unanswerable question. Too many variables.

Like some of the other guys have said, its always going to be "for their time" or "your own favorite" but for his time, Erik Kehoe was just so much better than everybody else, except George Holland was somewhat close. Kehoe just had the bike figured out...he was smooth as butter and rode incredibly smart. He was the mini version of Broc Glover! Who knows why he didn't become a multi time National Champion??? Partly because there were so many great riders at that time but somehow he just didn't take well to a full size bike although, he was rippin' fast on them and if he would have come up in the late 80's, he may have been one of the best ever.

Kehoe would have won a 125 National title or two, but was on the worst Team during those years[Suzuki]! Holland switched from Suzuki to Honda and one the championship right away. Dymond wasn't even a 125 specialist and won the title his first 2 years. Didn't matter how good you were, cant win on a slow 125!

Where did that happen? I remember Bader Manneh coming over,he raced our way at 2 day National somewhere this way in East Anglia,Howard Braband was an American that was a real fast local here, his Dad did of commentating, sorry just remeniscing...Smile

I notice Mike Allesi named on here a lot. We only travelled to race world minis twice and a couple other events but we beat Villo in a few, Allesi hole shot all races but Davi Millsaps caught him , passed him and won every race at every event we went to. Only time I have thought Mike was the fastest was the first few outdoor mx rounds of 2009 before he got hurt and Chad went on to win the title.

I watched all those guys on 80's and many since and while I agree that there's always a next one up, none of the next or any of the before compared to Eric Kehoe on 80's. Just my opinion of course, but most that witnessed Kehoe on 80's agrees

Kehoe was on point on the YZ80. I remember he showed up at Saddleback and listed "Yamaha Motorsports" as his sponsor (and he was!). Bryan Antinocci's dad (a great guy with a heart of gold) was so pissed he went and listed "Yamaha Motorsports" as Bryan's sponsor (he wasn't---LOL). Burnworth and Steve Schmidt showed up on full-factory RM80's. This was before Rudy and R&D were the "official" mini team. Burnworth and Schmidt both had the blue/yellow Suzuki JT gear---just like Barnett, et al. Their bikes were so bitchin. It was the second year of the RM80 and Suzuki was pining for a fight with Yamaha.

Honestly, I don't know whether Kehoe won or Burnworth won-----but I remember the battle. Tons of talent, right there.
BTW, Kehoe's Dad was the nicest guy in the ptis----very humble. And, I recall Burnworth had an older brother who rarely rode.

Dan, I'd love to sit down over lunch some day and swap stories----maybe even peak at your photo album.. Cool

I dunno why but i allways loved this video of Nico Izzi as an amateur. I believe the honda rider in the video is Lucas Crespi or something amongst those line, never heard anything of him afterwards. Probly one of my favorite mini rider videos ever.

Fun thread. Glad it popped back up.

Here's some history on the who trademarked the name minibike:

"Lynn Wineland, a former editor of Hot Rod Magazine, Motor Trend and the July 1958 issue of Rod & Custom, announced to the world two of the most innovative industry lexicons for the then-new motorized sports: “go kart” and “minibike.”

According to Wineland’s fast-paced “historical fiction” book “In Shadow of the Devil,” “minibike” is one word and “go kart” is two words, both lowercase.
"

http://www.vitalmx.com/forums/Old-School-Moto,22/A-tribute-to-Lynn-Wine…

Mr. Wineland made many-many friends in all aspects of the motorsports and power sports worlds and I have no doubt his friends would appreciate the sharing of historical factsSmile

HANDS DOWN MIKE ALESSI!!!! I'm sure he has been beat here and there by other riders BUT nobody has as many total wins as him.... I'm not just talking about amateur titles, I mean every race he entered. I remember going to perris raceway like 12yrs ago and he raced 5 different classes in one day. 85's 125's 250's. Both him and Jeff seriously were never more than 1-3 seconds apart.
I don't think Jeff got the credit he deserved but he was ALWAYS pushing Mike in motos. Good old daysSmile

Nico was a dominant force in a very fast group of kids. Some of the other riders in that moto are Trey Canard, Austin Stroup, Blake Wharton and Ben Lamay. It was a Florida Winter am 2003 I think.

I'll give an honorable mention to Gene Stull. One of the very few to straight up beat JS259.

Now, imagine a 40 rider gate with these guys in their prime on similar equipment:

Jeff Ward Mouse McCoy Eric Kehoe Buddy Antunez Brian Swink
Jimmy Button Jeff Emig RC J Stewart Windham
Reynard Greg Rand Spud Walters Shane Lawson Davey Yezek
Matt Walker Shae Bentley Brock Sellards Josh Sweat Charlie Bogard
Travis Pastrana Matt Shue Ezra Lusk Mike Alessi Ryan Villopoto
Matt Maximoff Richie Horton Robbie Horton Brandon Jesseman A. Cianciarulo
Nick Wey J Lawrence Hayden Richards Timmy Ferry Damon Bradshaw
Junior Jackson Jimmy Gaddis Jeromy Buehl Jeff Dement Steve Olsen

Obviousl=y there is any number of guys you could swap in/out of that list... but a gate that loaded would be EPIC!!

So this is an old thread, reading the first page people were saying jett reynolds was/is the next big thing. How is he doing now? How old is he? I know nothing about the amateur racing in the US.

Does anyone have any videos of James besides the mini warriors videos? I only got to see him ride once on a supermini at Lake Whitney. I would love to see some more videos of him on a mini.

As NYmotocross would say, he's the future. Not in the spotlight like the other kids. Hard worker. Can't wait.
