Eddie Hicks was pretty dominant for a while against a stacked field.

Agree on the Bruce Bunch comments, 80's motocross records would look a lot different if not for that tragedy.

Larry Brooks has not been mentioned that I saw, he was pretty bad ass too.

The early 80's were deep with talent in the mini classes, go back and look at the Golden State series Cycle News results and it was like a mini-national at each race.

I guess it all depends on what era you grew up watching, every generation has its own icons.

Welp, learn something new everyday. By the way, Eli was massive on that bike. He looks like he was damn near the same size as he is right now!

i was pretty surprised when i found it in our archives the other day as i wouldn't have thought their paths would have crossed either... i don't know how many classes they did race together or the results from that year, but it's cool they did meet during the amateurs

Your last sentence nailed it. I would say Paul Dennis and Danny Storbeck because they won LL the year I was there.

For the guy that was fast but never made it, I want to be the first to nominate Billy Fosnock for that one. Racer X could do a good story about his life and how things ended up but it would not have a happy ending.

How can you say that when I know you saw Mouse beat EVERYONE in SoCal back in the day. If he hadn't burnt out on riding, who knows where it would have gone.

I have to say Adam Cianciarulo, Mike Alessi or James Stewart. All amazing amateurs.

Bruce Bunch, Rick Hemme, and Kyle Flemming how different the record books may have looked.
So true!!

Any list like this should mention them.

Thanks for remembering

Just think of all the unknowns that ruled their local track but didn't have the funds to travel to the big events. Kid with the last name of Mann comes to mind.

I was at Delta, Ohio MX and this kid on a RM80 smoked the field every weekend and some weekends were regional qualifiers full gates, two races just to get in the last moto

Around 77'-80'

Have to go with Swink aswell, dude was bad fast. To bad he was expected to ride with injury's when he went Pro. Happy to see times have changed..Hence Tomac waiting for his collar-bone to heal VS plate it and ride
Yep, Baja in the 80's was killer.

I remember Mouse McCoy being in two page ads in magazines years ago, like on 60's.

Hard to argue with any of the names mentioned so far, but I'd like to give a shout out to Dennis Jonon. Dennis was the fastest kid I ever saw ride a 60...he did things on the 60 that the 80 kids only dreamed of. Huge triples, skimming Supercross style whoops...
Such a shame he got hurt in his prime...he was a joy to watch! Smile

I may be a little biased because he was local & we were friends but, I watched Travis Pastrana & Ernesto Fonseca have some pretty epic battles on 80's in the mid 90's!

For as badass as he was on mini bikes, it's a damn shame the only thing Danny Storbeck is really known for now is ending RJ's career.

The guys I always loved to see in the magazines when I was a kid were Jimmy Gaddis, Emig, Swink, Rick Simmet and Budman. Guys I actually got to see race were Tommy Clowers and Mike Craig. Those two absolutely owned Barona Oaks back in the day.

You said best minicycle rider of all time, AC won all 11 of his LLs titles on minicycles.

Jett has to potential to catch those guys, but for me, LLs tells the tale of the career. Taking noting away from him but some of the "titles" he has won have had less than 15 to 20 kids in the class. When AC was racing 50s there were multiple divisions, sometimes as many as three or four in the 50 class.

The double win thing at LLs last year was nothing short of amazing though and winning all 6 motos in any two classes puts him in a pretty rare group.

I saw Stewart put gaps on the rest of the field like I've never seen before, so my vote would have to be Stewart and Carmichael for the top 2 . Stewies minis always sounded soooo GOOD!!!

Charlie Bogard! Haha he was my child hood hero. Used to drool over his whips at lake Whitney! He's not accomplished as a lot of the others but he gave RC FITS!

Personal favorite, Chase Reed.

I sure miss watching Brandon ride.
