Who rides with a kidney belt on?

Edited Date/Time 10/29/2014 7:49am
I know this going to bring out probably just the old dudes like myself cause they just aren't cool these days, but who rides while wearing a kidney belt, why and what type? I still have and wear for back problems an old FOX Black Belt like what MC used to wear but it really needs replacing. Thoughts?

I ride with one due to breaking my back twice( both roadracing induced). I use a Thor and it does just fine. I used to use the one you spoke of but it disappeared after a hare scramble one day.I actually don't feel right riding without it.

I just hit 30 and started wearing one again after a few years without it. Wearing a thor belt now. Have some pinched nerves in my lower back and it feels like it keeps the organs and guts in place thru the choppy braking bumps and ruts.

TransWorld did an article about this a few issues back and I was surprised at how many pros they interviewed that say they still wear them.

I've worn one for about 3 or 4 years now and I'm 28. I used to have all sorts of stomach problems after a race. It originally started as weak core muscles so my organs would get all jumbled up while I race. It helped a lot. I've raced a few times without it since then and no problems. I've worked a lot on core muscles. But it just seems like it helps riding posture and feels odd without it on now.

I do.

The best kidney belts for those of us with back issues aren't available at motorcycle shops but at drugstores, Walmart, Target, etc. These are much wider and provide more adjustment typically than what is available at shops.

BTW regardless if you have core issues or not they are called kidney belts for a reason...to keep your kidneys from being jostled around excessively.

I raced all this year without one. Before this I always wore one. I now have a hernia just above my left nut.

Sorry to hear. Besides the obvious support I like having another layer of protection between my skin and God only knows what when I ride.

32 and I have worn one since I was in my early 20s. I wear an EVS. It's pretty thick on the back which gives a little more protection there.

The only thing less cool than wearing a kidney belt. Is not going to the track at all becasue your guts hurt to much from the last time you rode without one!

I wear one. It makes zero difference to my comfort riding. I've ridden without one, sometimes I feel my back a bit more, sometimes I don't. My back is always fine with the kidney belt though. It's not like it can be seen so there is no reason not to wear it.

Also I'm mid 20's and can deadlift over twice my weight so it's not like I have a weak core or anything. Just seems a bit silly to not wear one...

I have always worn one. I rode one day without it and felt naked.

I have had some internal injuries and not only does it help with that, it also adds some additional back protection and areas where my chest protector doesn't cover on my lower back.

I think I finally lost enough weight so it won't roll down anymore.... I might try to wear it on Sunday for the first time in a long time.

I've always worn one. Have a newer Fox one now, left it at the house one day and it felt so awkward not having it. Just feels more comfortable with it on.

Top 10 reasons why you don't wear a kidney belt when you ride a dirt bike!

1). Wore LBZ gear back in the day.

I find it keeps me in a more upright position for riding, which I like. No other reason I wear one.

I have an EVS one which is the best one I've ever owned. It's super comfortable but very rigid. The Fox ones are too flimsy.

I stopped wearing one when I got back into the sport... Still had my chest protector tho... Had a big spill and landed on my back... Have changed to a fox titan with built in back protection and at the bottom of that is a heavily padded kidney belt. Feel better already.

Protective gear is weird. If you always wore it, it doesn't seem to bother you. I don't get how the new kids only wear nylons and a jersey.
