I saw a diagram, of the faces of sports across the board (Current faces of the sports).
examples.

Golf: Tiger woods
NFL: Patrick Mahomes II
F1: Lewis Hamilton
NBA: Lebron James
UFC: Mcgregor
NHL: Crosby/ Mcdavid aka McJesus (In canada lol)
MLB: Mike Trout
Moto GP: Valetino Rossi maybe (Marc Marquez in some circles)

So it got me wondering, Who has the got damn torch for our sport SX/MX??
The 4 who had it are pretty much gone: MC/ RC/ CR/ JS

The person on the verge of taking that helm in my opinion was Ken Roczen, Before his arm injury.
The sport tried to push Jason Anderson into being the face of the sport, but he seemingly didnt like the attention.

Which kid will be able to bridge that Gap and get it on the verge of the mainstream?

Mcgregor is a joke

With personality being the top trait then it's AC for sure.

This person would also have to somewhat dominate for the next 5 years too. That's the hard part.

AC will be the face of the sport in the USA for as long as he chooses IMO, when he is done racing, he will be a cert for a media guy .

Mcgregor may be a joke, but you ask the lay person what they know about UFC, his name will almost always be known or mentioned.

#16 damn American hero is who I want to be the face.

It’s a good question. I think it’s KR for now at least (AC soon?).

The sport would benefit from a rider like McGrath again that has a larger than life personality and was built to not only win but entertain. That era was when the stadiums were full, new money was coming in from the outside and a lot of fans became interested after being exposed to the sport. Same with Pastrana, early James Stewart, etc.

At some point some riders should recognize the correlation between being entertaining and sponsorship $$.

Man, good question. Face of our sport at the moment? Or symbolic for past, present and future?
I dunno- Jeremy? RC? Malcolm Smith? McQueen's Sports Illustrated shot? A random mud covered, smiling face in a helmet?

|

1/3/2021 12:06 PM

Roczen is probably the best known out of the current riders, despite others having had better results recently.
Not sure that makes him the face of a sport though.

|

1/3/2021 12:08 PM

No-one has transcended the sport like Bubba did and I doubt any of the current riders will become a mainstream name like him. But if we have to choose who is the current "face of the sport" it has to be Ken, who has well over a million instagram followers, and as far as I can see most other guys aren't even close to that. AC has the potential to make it big though.

"It's still Dungey"... lmao, that has to be a joke right? Outside of some brief comeback rumours who is talking about Dungey? Even when he was dominating the sport he wasn't as popular as Ken.

The general public would say this guy

At the Moment and to the future. My Guess is that some of these Instagram Phenoms (Kids) when they go pro might be able to draw in more eyes.

But like jesse318pnw said: someone should recognize the correlation between being entertaining and sponsorship $$.

One of us that states our opinion and disagrees with something? Well sorry bro... it doesn't take anything away from Dungey's career to say that he never had the personality or riding style to become super popular. The Wheaties box was 5 years ago, and even Tomac has more IG followers and seems to be more well known than Dungey.

All the other sports you list are "real" sports organizations with professional PR people at the helm that know what they are doing.

Supercross is literally run by a former circus owner who treats racers like poorly paid help instead of world class athletes. Motocross is run by a loose knit group of local track owners and a motocross magazine editor.

This is a fringe "sport" to begin with, and the people in charge of promoting it don't have enough skills.

The athletes are no better, most being home schooled kids who can't do anything in front of a camera except "can't thank" their sponsors. Only Adam Cianciarulo or Ken Roczen stand out as riders who are articulate and confident enough to hold their own for television interviews.

It's ironic, the greatest athletes in the world in a sport that has no interest or ability in showing America how incredibly fit and talented these riders are. Even skiing does a better job at promoting their athletes than motocross does.

There is no push by the stakeholders to expand this sport past its base of young energy drink consumers.
