Where did the nicknames go?

Remember when riders had good nicknames like the beast from the east, fro daddy, button fly, factory Phil, 5 time... etc

Now everyone is just BB4 or CR22 and so on. It's really lame that someone adapted those monikers for a few and now it's stuck on.

A lot of the original nick names came from local race announcers and the nick name carried through to the pros, and then the Larrys, (Larry Huffman, Larry Naston, Larry Meyers) came up with a bunch of them to hype up the crowd.

Ok so now that you've accurately determined when it stopped, what about when it actually started? Who is the earliest rider with a famous nickname? Stick to motocross riders please. I'm curious about some of the early GP racers. For instance, we called DeCoster 'The Man' over here in the mid 70s but, Jeff Ward may have been the 'Flying Freckle' before that.? I mean, did Jeff Smith have a nickname? Aberg? Hallman?
