You'd be surprised, all the manufactures are having parts made in cheaper regions of the world, not just KTM. Honda are probably the worst for it.

I'd be surprised if more than 20% of KTM's current offroad bikes' parts was made in-house.

Any part that isn't extremely dirtbike/model specific is most likely outsourced.

For example, I needed a clutch pressure plate for my SX250, which is the only model that has this specific plate and it said on the part "made in Austria by KTM". I'm sure these types of parts are actually made by KTM because of the low sales volume.

It's true. You would be surprised at how many parts are outsourced, the car industry included. We use Motul oil made in Vietnam, Honda oil made by Caltex. Stihl sources out of China, the list is long.

I worked at a KTM dealership and some engine parts were made in Austria, Italy, France, and Russia I don't ever remember India but I wouldn't be surprised if that happens soon

This, and Switzerland.

The low displacement bikes are build in low cost regions. Just like the Japanese bikes.
Honda grom/MSX engines = Kymco Taiwan
Suzuki lower range outboards = Philippines

etc etc

It's the same for every brand. The cheaper range goes to the low cost countries while the upper, more expensive range stays in house. There's a reason why a 125/250 road bike costs 5k and a 450 offroad bike costs almost double that.

I work for a Caterpillar dealer and have parts from Mexico, Germany, India, Brazil, Canada and China so I guess most manufacturers out source suppliers

I had an early KTM 125EXC in the shop last week for a new clutch basket. I noticed on the basket it had 'FCC' stamped in to it, so made in Japan.

I'm pretty sure this was the original OEM clutch basket.
So what outsourced parts are on KTM's?

WP
BREMBO
KEIHIN
FCC
EXCEL
MAGURA

We know vertex makes their Pistons. Who makes their electronics?
THAT CLUTCH BASKET WAS PROBABLY A REPLACEMENT pro-X PART. FCC Make clutch parts for HONDA, Yamaha, suzuki & Pro-X.

As far as KTM parts, I think their 4-stroke pistons are CP or JC, their 2-stroke pistons are Vertex, their crankshafts are Pankl and their 4-stroke valves are Del West.

A 5-6 years ago maybe someone brought a part up to the parts counter I was working at and he told me to guess what it came out of. It was a KTM part number which was obvious, and had the KTM logo on it. Pulled it out of his Mini Cooper! Can't remember exactly what it was but wanted to say it had something to do with an oil line. Kind of a trip. Part number didn't pull up on ktm dealer site.
Some parts of Mini Cooper as well as Peugeot RCZ are made in Austria by Magna Steyr.

CP stands for Calvert Products. They weren't acquired by Pankl until like 2008. I believe all of the KTM 4 stroke pistons are made in California at CP's facility.

The 790 will be made in China starting next year, so buy the Austrian one now.

Every company has manufacturing struggles and most all have to deal with the nature of saving cost. So every couple years depending on bike updates new tooling has to be made for up and coming future parts.

Tooling for each individual part is very expensive and most of the time is sent to Taiwan and Malaysia. Suzuki and Honda have much resourses in these countries and use them to their benefit.

Ktm enlists help from many companies today and would surprise you how little ktm actually does from a manufacturing standpoint. Ktm does not have the money like honda and Suzuki to offer such manufacturing.
