The 2001 models were released to the public in late 2000 here in the USA I believe.
Remember Fonseca winning A1 on that YOT one in 2001 when we were there?
The one that I had that I sold you was a 2001 and the first one in the State of Oregon. Wink

Not sure when the first YZ250F PROTOTYPE'S WERE MADE.
Prolly 98,99 possibly...maybe even earlier.

That bike you sold me was one of the best bikes Ive owned. That thing started on the first kick every time. That bike could cartwheel down the track and still fire on the first kick.

Glad you liked it. Wink

One thing I do remember reading about the YZ250F's was that Yoshi designed it in his spare time.
And some Yamaha R&D guys were over in Japan and seen it and really liked it,I think Porter was one of them.
Guess they decided to go forward with it after that.

I loved my 2002, second year of mass production. I switched out the exhaust cam for a 2003 which had the auto decompression system. In my opinion and seat of the pants, the 2001 to 2004 had the best power band! I have 2005 and it just wasn't the same as my 2002!! They got soft after that!!

I thought that Stefan Everts rode a YZ250F in the MX2 in 2003 and that he was the first one that rode one in competition...

That is interesting...never knew that they even existed. Smile
Were they only made for that one year?
Did they race them in the 125 class,or were they only allowed in the 250 class back then?

The last year YZ's were alpha, I think was G or H.

RM's were A, B and then I think T. T was the last RM alpha designation.

Yamaha still uses letters to denote year The 2010's were Z and the 11's are AB.
01N, 03R 04S 05T 06V 07W 08X 09 L.

All brands use the same digit in the vin # to denote the year. 2009s had a 9, 2010s an A, 11s a B, 12s a C, etc.

2001 Was the first production, by 2003 they were already into the second generation. In 2003 the gas tanks were flattened out & went further under the seat. Allot of those 2003 to 2005 tanks are now cracking because it gets weight of the rider through the seat.

2001 Was first production. I had the first one in florida in december. 2000 First ride out on it, shattered my tib/fib and ankle in 13 places. Great way to start out on 4 strokes.

I believe Yamaha had that bike in testing as early as '99. Although the production four stroke was only available in late 2000 early 2001 as a 2001 model.

I did the exact same on my 01 yz250f. 13 breaks into the tib / fib plateau, 2 plates & 10 screws forever holding it together.

Still, for it's time, one of the best bikes ever made.

First race and first unveiling in public of the 4-stroke YZ250F. Ernesto Fonseca rode the bike at the 2000 Japan National at Saitama.
