I thought you had to win a championship to get a permanent number. Or is that a single digit? Can someone remind me why Chisholm has #11?

To earn a career number, you have to finish top ten in points overall for the season (250 & 450 indoors and outdoors combined). Kyle earned his in 2010 with a 10th overall in 450 SX and a 6th overall in 450 MX. Once he earned a career number (#11 was available) you have to score a minimum of 25 points a year to keep it.

I hate this numbering system. Run what you earn each year.

What ML said. By the way if anyone was wondering, Aaron Plessinger and Alex Martin are pretty much the only two riders that have a shot at earning a career number this year.

So I know who is a contender and who is not simply by looking at their number. Unless it's their first year, no triple digit guy is going to run up front for long under the old system. I loved the old system where you had to earn your number. It was such a great feeling when Chris Coleman, Pauly Carpenter, or one of the other local Central NY guys earned a top 100 number. Shit, now, someone practically has to die in order for someone to get a 2 digit number

And congrats to chiz on a great couple of motos at southwick!

I remember when he was turning into a top 5 guy in sx before the big crash. That career number of his does not hurt my feelings at all, just say'n

I Canada they do (run the number you earned) . It is confusing , every rider has a different number every year.

Champions get a permanent number? Giving the top guys in your sport a new number every year is pretty lame.

I like the "run what you earned" idea. Give former champs the option to run their initials and that's that!

Here's what the top 15 would look like right now:

1 Ryan Dungey
2 Ken Roczen
3 Justin Barcia
4 Blake Baggett
5 Christophe Pourcel
6 Jason Anderson
7 Broc Tickle
8 Phil Nicoletti
9 Weston Peick
10 Fredrik Noren
11 Kyle Chisholm
12 Justin Brayton
13 Josh Grant
14 Eli Tomac
15 Trey Canard

The guy that finished tenth loses out on that number because a guy that finished 12th last year finished top ten at some point in history and gets to claim it til he decides he's done with it? I bet that number would mean something to Noren.

Or the guy that finished 5th can't run that number because the champ(currently running the #1...all year long) needs it to fall back on? He's not even using it...lol

Sorry, the current system is stupid.

I have a question about numbers concerning JS7. He did not earn any points last year. And does not look like he will earn 25 this year. Could he run the # 259 last year on his farewell tour ??

No. Exceptions are made when you own a company called Seven.

Also, why is the #1 still available if Ricky Carmichael is the Greatest Of All Time?

It's all so confusing...

Did I mention that Nicoletti and Peick can't run #'s 8 & 9 because....they're not being used....at this time. Check back later Huh

And Canard and Wilson passed on taking a single digit #.

Pretty retarded lol

And Chiz earned that number. He had some great seasons before injuries set him way back. I'm a Chiz fan

You know,... he'd still be #11 this year. And yes, he earned it.

I was never confused who my favorite riders were prior to this numbering system... Are you guys that think it's confusing really that dull that you can't figure it out? Really?

I always thought it was cool to see what they earned that year and how they looked with the new numbers every year on their bikes and gear.

One word: Branding
For all that gear the riders get to sell at the races? Oh yeah, they are not allowed to do that. But you can buy one for the moto tees vendor...

Thanks to those of you for the kind words! And yes ML512 is correct. 2010 I think I was like 5th or 6th in total points out of everyone so I got to choose a permanent number (which is really cool for me in my opinion). And like wide open Wally said I felt like I was still improving into 2011 but had a really bad injury that almost put me out for good at Houston sx that year. It was a crash that was out of my control. Had another bad one out of my control in 2013 also. So, no excuses, injuries are part of what we do but it's always hard to keep improving when you're not riding. So I've had a few bad ones the last few years and obviously a big one to my shoulder this year in sx that I'm still recovering from but I still feel like I have what it takes to keep getting better and get back up front in the top 10 so it's always a work in progress. Again thanks for the support guys! Always appreciated! See you at the races! #teamchiz haha

Stewart gave him the number 11 for blocking Reed in Salt Lake City.
7/12/2016 10:18pm
Nothing better for that than giving former champs the option to run their initials.
And what if you're not a former champion? Guys like Brayton, Short, Chisholm and others are known for their numbers, their bike have changed over the years but fans can always recognize who is who by the number.

Good luck building up a fan base if every year the fans have to remember which number belongs to which guy. Doesn't really make sense from a financial standpoint if you're trying to make a living off this, your number is sort of part of you.

Proof enough why he earns this number. This is why I love MX, and vital

Imagine say, Bradley Smith or Eugene Laverty coming into a forum and posting. Or the Q&A, the Barcia and the Alessi ones stick out in my mind how even with all the shit dished out, people realize they are people and understand and are respectful.

Keep up the good work vital people
