Half the world was 80cc rule, half the world was 85cc , some brands made 2 model specs at 79cc and 82cc , I think it changed in around 2000 when the world juniors started and all the counties went to 85cc rules , kawi went out to 84cc in 2001 and called the bike an 85

That YZ85 was the best looking 80/85 in 02. I got one for Christmas of 2001. I loved that bike!

Nah couldn’t be, I raced a cr80 in 01. I swore up and down I wasn’t winning because of those extra couple of CC’s. Little did I know about talent or skill.

This.

Kawi was the first. My 99 KX80 was being eaten alive by YZ's until the 2001 KX85 came out, that bike was unbelievably fast. I was pulling holeshots every moto and jumps I used to need 4th gear pinned to make became a breeze. The dual air shrouds for some reason made a difference in handling....maybe just a mental effect or because it helped with my body positioning but I absolutely hated the bikes before that only had 1. Plus it looked way better.

Wait a minute....so the size of the motors actually changed? I thought they were all 82-83cc the whole time and the change was just a name change?

Yes they updated each model as far as i know. The rule was always 85cc i thought. Back when each model could be bored over without replating manufacturers left room so you could go 80 over and still be legal.

My old man got me a brand new 2001 KX85 when it came out. Having two radiator shrouds was the coolest thing ever at the time even though there was still only one radiator. Later got the Pro Circuit graphics and some black Excels. Good times!
