A few of my riding buddies were talking about this last week. Would you rather have a 10 year old factory race bike, or a brand new production bike of the same size(450 & 450)? What about a 5 year old factory bike vs a new from the dealership bike?? Im sure it all depends, but keeping only performance in mind, I think even a 10 year old same type race bike would be at least as good as a new variant.

What are the other opinions?

Lets also assume that the race bike was brand new. Not thrashed and still dripping in mud. But freshly put together in the pits and ready for you to take home. Same with the production bike.

Just having a factory bike without being setup exactly for you I can't imagine being that good. Suspension components will only do so much if not tuned to track and rider.

Id take an older factory bike. I ride an 09 kx450 and still don’t ring it out like a 125. I dont see how a new one with even more power will change that. Plus on a factory bike you already get all the goodies.

I'm pretty sure I'd go faster on a new stock bike that is set up, but no one's going to walk over to my pits and drool over a new stock bike though. I'll take a new stock bike. What you gonna do when that works transmission that is built to last for a race or two grenades???? Call factory honda and see if they ll make you some more hand machined parts?

Four strokes have evolved so much, I don't think I'd want any of the works 450's over a new 220lb fuel injected, electric start wonder bikes from KTM or Husqvarna. But, if I could have one of the last works 2 strokes, I'd definitely choose that. Reed's last yz, Jeremy's last CR, or Pastranas last RM (I'm 6'3" so RC's is out) or Bubba's KX. Those bikes are bikes I would love to own and ride.

I would like a factory, but the spare parts is a problem with so many special pieces,

I do not know what the rider was called that way around in the 80s I think, he won one when they were still raffling the factory bikes among the participants of a race who asked to buy it, and of course after that, the factories pressed and no longer became more raffles, because they could not be bought anymore. I think that guy took an Honda factory at the price of a normal one.

So if it was so I could get a factory or a normal one, I would ask for the Honda CR500 1984 from Malherbe for example hahaha

Based on my skill level, I'll take a 2018 with electric start because all the bells and whistles that come on a Factory bike won't do squat for me in terms of making me faster. The bike (any bike) isn't holding me back. My problem is too much LOFT. Lack Of Fucking Talent

Same can be said for my golf game.

Ok...i would go with a full factory bike if it was within the last five years over stock. The 2013 Honda CRF450R would be my nbike of choice. 10 years? The novalty of it would be cool but around that ooint i think production goes beyond..

I would rather a brand new current '18. Its gonna be plenty for me in stock form.

But reality, my 99 YZ125 is plenty for me right now.

KTM stroke the 150 and make it a 175. Then add some blue plastic sort of like the 1997.5 special edition 200

I hate these thread titles that are like "Would you?". Ive never seen another forum that does this.

Depends if your talking speed or enjoyment, if you want speed it's the modern 450 all day every day, if you want a bit of enjoyment the old factory machine.
