What would you do to supercross tracks to make them less "cookie cutter"

What would be the next evolution in Supercross track design? And no not jumps over a gator pit. I'm getting pretty bored of the same ol tracks year after year. I know there is limitations in how much dirt they are willing to bring in, but what could they do differently to make better racing?

Gnarly whoops is the first thing I'd add. Those vids from the '90s with guys barely making it through them slowed the racing down and separated the riders.

From there, as much as I bitch about current racetrack design, I'm not sure that there's much that they CAN do. WIth modern 450s, these guys are hucking every single section with a quick blip of the throttle. Back in the day, the bikes could be tamed via track design, but nowadays, I don't know if it's even possible. They used to be able to put a simple roller in a section to slow the guys down, but now they'd just blast it (ala JS7 at Daytona) and create a new rhythm.

All that said, I'm with you: I would LOVE for them to figure out how to simplify the racing, remove the blazing fast sections and create technical tracks that challenge the riders. Heck, I was thinking the other day while watching a 90s supercross clip that the racing almost looked like a form of endurocross. The racing was very slow, technical, and tricky. Now it's just who can jump the farthest without dying.

S turns, varying size whoops , or retro moguls. Single jumps to flat like Vegas,

There's no solution to "cookie cutter" tracks, that's just an excuse that a bored fan makes when one person is dominating.

Huge whoops isn't going to stop riders from blitzing them, it's just going to cause more injuries.

Keep whoops as is, the difficulty will be there no matter the size. Making them bigger doesn't do anything except make the crashes bigger, is that what you want?

S turns become VERY 1 lined and don't create anything good.

Single jumps to flat? LOL.. Throw on some SX suspension and hit one of those sections 20 laps in a row and see how your wrists and back feels.

If you want my opinion, more rhythm sections, less 90 degree corners, less sand, variety in rhythm section obstacles, limit triples to one.

I remember a user here a while back that mentioned something about getting rid of the finish line jump and adding a straight with rollers or something through a finish line. Might sound stupid but I think that would be cool, maybe something to try at Monster Cup? I also think there should be less sand, keep the whoops the same and perhaps some ways to make riders break their momentum a bit more.

"Stutter" type whoops instead of whoops which are now basically a small rhythm section.
Edit: Man Albee had some spectacular get-offs over the course of his career!

Before we get to the tracks: outlaw holeshot devices and remove the metal grates. Make the starts unpredictable again.

Two: award points in the qualifiers, but invert the gate picks for the main based on qualifying position. Want the points? Be prepared to work harder in the main.

Then just make sure the track has long lanes and a lot of 180s, a long, difficult whoops section and some random obstacles (like the sand section in Tampa). Screw the rider's "flow".

I think it's time to start putting restrictions on the bikes, start with tires. Shorter knobs and closer spacing so the tracks don't get chewed up so fast. Outlaw the holeshot device like the above poster said. Not sure what to do about horsepower and torque, I don't know what those factory bikes put out. But, start with tires.

Remove the whoops entirely. Whoops basically suck.

Add more and longer larger flat turns.

I'd even consider making most jumps tabletops. Missing a landing should be a hindrance, but not a race ender.

All of these things would make racing better.

Basically stop building stupid shit that "separates the riders". It's a race, we dont want the riders separated.

It would also be nice to completely do away with championship points. Each race should stand on its own.

I think it’d be cool if they could bring in more dirt and maybe add a little “elevation”, and I use elevation loosely. Maybe instead of a straight with a wall jump they build a big mound to scrub similar to the mountain in teuschental? Definitely couldn’t build anything that big but maybe have a little bit of varying elevation through the track?

I don't know but if I never see another on/off again it will be too soon. What's the point of them, might as well be a straight away as it doesn't slow anyone and they all do them the same.

Be nice to see more straight bend sand sections along with wider tracks with different rhythm sections.

Maybe no finish line jump and make it a straight away race for the flag, maybe add some whoops to make it interesting.

A gravel corner would be cool to see as a fan, would definitely slow things down.

Also maybe sand section start.

How about a round track race

A time trial race 15 second start intervals

Team Relay race gimmicky but would be fun as a one off.

Endurance race, anyone who gets lapped is eliminated till there is a top ten and then 5 laps remain and fasted lap wins the race.

A much larger emphasis on option (split) lanes where one isn't favored over the other. Probably a tricky thing to do, and it would likely have to be tested on press day.

Oh, and less fucking races.

There is an expectation now that everything has to be flowing, jumps to landings, whoops to skim. I’d see some old school obstacles, big whoops that maybe can’t be skimmed or have to rolled/doubled, sharp wall/ski jumps. It’s not entertaining when the guys spend 80% of a section in the air.

In CT we have no public tracks anymore, I would kill just to have a local track again. Build it as cookie cutter as you want

a track that's open to anyone that wants to ride? didn't think that was a hard one to figure out.

There are 3 or 4 private tacks in CT. 2 are cycle clubs that are member only and the others are privately owned and used for training

It could have meant public open space (never had any here), or a privately owned track that’s open to the public for practice days like most.

Reduce displacement, reduce number of strokes in the motor by 2.

back to back hairpin turns with no obstacles between them.

Right hand 1st turn (not a favorite I know)

Mechanics can shoot roman candles at opposing riders (or any rider) during odd numbered rounds.

Sand start or 1st turn

bracket racing

The BMX'er in me would like some kind of step up / step down...Step up, land into a 90 bowl turn, step back down, bmx style, may have to go into stands detroit style, but if you dont get it right. It dont happen. Wishful thinking I know

Hire ex pro's to design them. Pastrana, Windham and Stew come to mind. Cool
Yep^^^

And make a few tracks a year designed by 11yr old kids in a contest. I know there'd be a few school busses buried under jumps.
