I posted this in the New Rider section and didn't get many replies. I am looking for more opinions.

So my first dirtbike I bought, a 2003 CR 125 got stolen only after 3-4 real rides on it. I really liked the bike a lot but I knew I would probably like a 250f more. So I started my hunt for a 250f after I lost my poor 125. I found a pretty nice deal on a 2006 CRF 250 that basically just needed a valve adjustment and a few other small things. So I got that and did the work to it. I absolutely love riding that bike in both track and trails.

After about 5-6 rides on my 250F, I get a call from the police telling me my CR 125 was found in a ditch. I go to pick it up in a sketchy part of town and the engine is locked up and fairings skidded up from doing wheelies on the road.

So I basically completely rebuilt the CR and got some plastics to make it pretty again.

Now what do I do? I have three options as I see it. Sell my 03 CR 125 and use that money to rebuild my 250. Sell my 06 CRF250 to have cash in the bank. Or sell both for a newer bike. I know my CR 125 is completely fresh, but my 250 is played out. I have only adjusted the valves on it. I have not seen the head and don't know of the previous owners care for it. I like to ride motocross, but will pretty much ride anywhere any chance I get. harescramble type stuff, motocross, anything. I KNOW for a fact I liked the 250F more on the track, but didn't really ride my 125 enough to find out if I could ride motocross with it.

What would you do in my situation? Thanks

IMO, sell the 250F, keep the 125 and the cash.

2005 250f is a ticking time bomb, sell it and keep the 125, or both and get something newer (your choice), but I wouldn't keep the 250f.

And because nothing grabs peoples attention like pictures:

Here is my 125 when I first bought it

Then when I bought the 250 after my 125 was stolen.

Aaaand my crank after I got my 125 back

Making my 125 sweet again.

And my finished 125 (Except I got new swingarm decals. The tan color bothered me). You can see my 250 in the back getting no attention.

The 250f is actually a 2006. Pretty solid bikes from what i've read. But... It has PR^2 engraved in the side of the head. Anyone know who does that? I haven't had the head off to look at whats done to it.

That's typically true, but once you have to start adjusting the valves on a 250F (especially the 04-06 Hondas - and I've had 3 of them) you'll likely only get a few more adjustments then you will need to completely rebuild the head and that's at least $500 minimum. Then while your doing the head, you may as well drop in a new top end and cam chain - which is another $200 if you do the work (more if you have someone do it for ya). I'd adjust your valves perfectly and sell that badboy. It's only a matter of time that bike is going to need a lot of work. JMHO

If I was you I would sell the 250F and keep the 125.
Ride it for a while and If you ever get sick of it you can always sell it and find another 250F.

Well I am kind of hearing what I didn't want to hear, but is probably the best choice. I would definitely like to sell both and get a newer 250f, but riding season is JUST now starting in Ohio and I don't want to go through the whole bike exchange hassle. Selling one to get another is annoying in itself. And I've got 2 bikes to sell, then another to buy. Especially after I put so much love into both my bikes in the first place. I am thinking of just selling my 125 and putting money into my 250.

My sort of plan- Ride the hell out of my 125 this season, then sell it towards the end of the season. Then ride my 250 to close the season out. Then rebuild the 250 over winter.

And yeah, Oxmall you were kind of close. I am only 24 but I work as a mechanic at a Honda dealership. So thankfully I have most resources I could want.

I was going to say you seem to be pretty knowledgeable and have a nice shop to work in for a first time buyer. If you're a mechanic do the math on what is needed for the 250F and make your decision. If you have the coin and like them both keep them both. Ride the snot out of the 125 and it will probably improve your 250F results. Back in the olden days some riders would practice a lot on the 125s and it improved their results on 250s.

Like others have said, it's just a matter of time before you'll have to drop some heavy coin into that 250. I'd keep the 125 or sell them both for a freshy.

I would love to keep them both for training purposes. It felt like I was cheating when I switched to the 250f. But financially I don't want to maintain two bikes.

And I can't tell if you're serious or not, but there is no way in hell I could ride anywhere near the ability of using all of what a 450 has to offer lol. We got a 2004 CRF450 at work for service and I rode it around for a little while... It's fun and all but no thanks. I only weigh 160lbs.

If I were to sell both bikes, I guess I would try and sell my 250 right away, then keep my 125 for this season. But a bigger part of me would rather just sell my 125 and do the work to my 250. Just for peace of mind- so I know exactly what's been done and how it's been done. Id feel more comfortable with that than buy a newer one that has potentially been raped already. Thats not crazy, right?

^^ That's the only reason rebuilding a '06 250f makes sense to me. I'd probably still sell them both and try to find a good deal on a slightly newer, low use 250f from someone who has been around.

Since this is your first bike, I would hang onto the 125 and ride it for a year since it will force you to learn good techniques and will make you a better rider overall. I spent a few years on an 04 cr and I think it helped me out a lot, and I just recently started riding it again after parking it for a few years. Just something to think about.

I actually hadn't thought of that. Id have to ride a 250t for a little while before deciding though. I really love the fourstrokes.

Sell them both and get a newish 250 YZ. Slap a fat flywheel weight on it and have fun for the next 10 years.

I agree with olddude.

The 250 is a race bike and isn't built the same way as Uncle Jesse's F100 pickup. You can't just keep adjusting valves thinking everything is fine. Once the valves start to need adjusting, it's a slippery slope. You'll be sending the head off for a rebuild before you know it. Get out while you can.

The 125 is romantic. We all love to watch Jimmy D rip around on one. They are great learning tools and all that. But IMO the 125 is only fun when you are ripping. Ask yourself....do you rip? Are you pinned through the corners? If yes, then maybe you should keep it. Otherwise......get a fresh 250f.

I wouldn't say that, I've had my 05 CRF250r since new and it's never actually blown up but Ive rebuilt the bottom end once and topend I think 5 times. I raced it for 3 years in the 250advanced class and now just trails, it's been a great bike imo.

besides the 03,04 cr125s are slow as heck even when modded. the 05 125 was a much better year ive read you can mod them easy and make them scream

You should do what you want to do. Smile What bike do you like riding more? What is going to be a better bike in the long run (fun wise and cost wise)? If you're not planning on being the next RC, I'd take the 125 and just have fun. That's what it's all about.

Sell the CRF250 engine, find a CR500 motor and stuff it into the CRF frame. Then you'll have an AF500, and you can ride the 125 while you do the conversionEvil I have a 125 and I can't seem to part with it, they are always too much fun.Cool

The answer to your question resides in the answer to "do you plan on racing"? If so sell them both for a newer bike.
If not, Keep them both.
