Kawasaki to Shift Motorcycle Output to Thailand, Yomiuri Says

By Naoko Fujimura

Aug. 24 (Bloomberg) -- Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. will start shifting production of medium-sized and large motorcycles to Thailand from Japan from 2010 because of cheaper labor costs, the Yomiuri newspaper said today.

Kawasaki would be the first Japanese company to move large motorcycle manufacturing to an emerging country, the newspaper reported, without saying where it got the information. Honda Motor Co. is also considering shifting the production of medium- sized motorcycles to Thailand from Japan, the report said.

Yep, just like a lot of the manufacturing is moving from China. Companies will go to where the workers are the "hungriest".

Does that mean that new 450's won't cost $8000 anymore?

Honda has, or had, manufacturing in Brazil as well. Not sure if the models manufactured there were for the domestic market only or if they exported some as well. The last company I worked for supplied machine tools to the plants in Brazil. That's been awhile though. Before the machines could ship we had to prove the machines and they would send pallets of raw castings, cylinders , heads, valve covers, etc. Expensive parts to be throwing around (and throwing away). Pennies to them though.

Sooner or later either all the mexicans will do it here for next to nothing or we will have the hungriest work force and no it will not be a good thing. Why do foreign cars sell so well? Because they are better made than american ones!

What do we call Japanese cars built in America? Or American cars built in Canada? Or German cars built in America? Get the drift? It is a non issue!!!!

those pirelli tires are made Brazil

European honda's are made in Italy.

It's not where they are made what's important, it's how good the quality control is.

As long as they are made according to the Japanese specs, all is good.

Setting up plants in those countries reduces costs for the manufacter and boost the economy in that country=winwin for them.
Hopefully the manufacter now reduces the price but i'm not so naïeve to believe that.

Wasn't Honda closing down some or most of the bike manufacturing plants here in the US?

Honda have been making cars and scooters in Thailand for ages. If any of you have been to Bangkok, you'll see the Jp money around the place in the architecture.

Been thru this on another site, mainly about H-D being an American bike.
Vehicles, almost everything, is made from parts produced all over the globe.

If it's designed, and the major profits go to a certain company, it's made by them.
