I am looking at local online forums. Guys are selling 08 CRF450s for $3000. One guy has his 09 KXF250 for $2000 and they still are not selling. I just picked up a 09 KXF450 for $4500 and trying to sell my 06 CRF450 for $2000 and can't even get a call. Have it posted on local forums and cycletrader.com. Is the market really that bad. I mean these bikes are bringing $8000 brand new before any upgrades. Really sad.

Id say its a phantom demand and probably a ending product lifecycle. The fact is all of us nobody's like affordable bikes that are easily maintained i.e. the two stroke. Also, who wants to refinance a house to just buy a dirt bike, jeez 8000 grand thats enough to buy a Harley 883 Iron.

If one happened to be in the market for a used bike, that person might be tempted to say "nothing" is wrong with used bike prices....

Its all about opportunity costs my friend. "How much do I want?" and "How much are you willing to give?"

I think its because there is no way of knowing how the last owner took care of the bike. I had 09crf450 for 6 months last year and sold it for 5500. I thought it was fair because I didnt pay msrp. I paid 6700, now if I would have paid 8000+, i def see what you are talking about. I knew a guy who bought a year old bike in perfect condition, then the motor let go on the first ride. There is just no way of knowing. That and the nature of our sport and what the bike go through.

Buying a bike is not an investment. Buyers know that used four stroke purchases can be a very dangerous purchase if the bike is not maintained properly. Best to buy used bikes in fire sales or shop around to get a deal. Bought a new 2006 YZ 250 last year for $4,000. Its the same price I paid for a brand new 2006 YZ 125. If you dont need to sell it, hold on to it.

Uh....thats supply/ demand. Opportunity cost would be like giving up your time to earn extra money by working overtime.

I'll bill you later........... :-)

Plus, what is killing used 450 prices is new ones selling for 4999$

The market is super soft nowadays.

just sold a 09 KX 450 for $5700 that was loaded with stuff. It had 12hrs on it. I bought it last July with 1 hr on it for $5500. Guy needed money more than the bike...

You want to see high prices, try buying a 50. 03's/04 Sr's brining $1000+ and guys wont move.

The market is flooded with used $ strokes, as people are trying to dump them before they blow, in hopes of grabbing a 2 stroke.

Used 4 strokes are time bomb. The average Joe can't work on them. Also riding areas are going away. You need to have a demand and if you can't find a place to ride why buy one?

In the last 5 months I have been trying to give my 09 450 away at $4000.. Maybe 5 calls on it.. In the meantime I have sold my 08 YZ250 and my 07 yz250( both 2strokes) the first day they were listed and for more than $4500 each. When I sold the 07 last month I practically had 2 guys in a bidding war to get it. I have a guy comming to look at my 450 today.. Hopefully it sells so I can go put a deposit on a 2011 KTM 250sx

I feel better now. At least everyone is having the same troubles I am.

Cant get rid of a new 08rmz 250. Its not "new", it was broken in and put in a garage and thats it. offers of 1500, 2500 and 3000. Off a bike that cost 6500 after tax. Screw trying to give someone a nice new bike, I'm keeping it.

Ah how I long for the good ol days of MX when you could buy a new bike every two years and only lose about a grand a year on the used one.

Hmmm....economy is ALOT worse then the government lets you believe. If the dollar keeps rallying versus every other currency you may just be able to get some bangin deals on 11 or 12 model year bikes. Just to give an idea of where we are....last year it took $1.60 to purchase one Euro. This year at this time it's down to $1.22ish(great for US buying power.....poor for exports). Back in 01-02 it only took $.79 for a Euro. So you can see where we are going. Compare prices from back then to now with the currency. Also, look at Ebay.....there is SOOOO much leftover NEW inventory throughout the world that you can't even find buyers for used stuff as the deals on new bikes are too bangin to pass up. I just bought a leftover 08 rmz for $5300 out the door. Why would I spend $4500 on a used 09? Turbo

I see some great looking 4-strokes for sale locally. Although I am tempted, I cant get myself to drop a few grand on a big fat pig that's about to spill it's guts at any moment. The new yzf450, ktm 350f, and husaberg's are now the only 4-strokes that interest me, but not to the point of dropping the cash. I know there are some incredible 2-strokes on the horizon, therefore I must wait a bit to be poor again, but not as poor as I would be with a 4. Opinion only....

I wouldnt even consider buying a used 4stroke unless I knew the person and witnessed how the bike was taken care of from new. Too risky and too expensive.

That is the simple truth right there.

You're right! It shouldn't ever take this long for people to realize they are being sold on a bad idea. It would be even better if more people knew what a bad idea smelled like so they could avoid buying into it at the beginning...

Unfortunately for the non-sheeple in a population, the sheeple who make up the vast majority can be effectively sold on nearly any idea, no matter how stupid it is. This means that every once in a while, you'll find yourself wondering why the radio is filled with boy bands, why property taxes are 10 or 12 k per houshold in a state where public services are threadbare to say the least, and also why the world got all kissy faced with 4 stroke motocross bikes that were Heavier, Hard to start, Slower (check out ANY supercross all the way up to and including 05 where one was actually being ridden), More expensive IN EVERY WAY, AND shorter on service life while being many times more prone to catastrophic failures, from the day the first ones farted off the factory floors.

With enough shiny pro 4 stroke TV talk from properly coached race announcers/bike pushers, plus a load of half truths in magazines along with some well placed omissions of fact, you can apparently sell just about any basket case to a lot of people.

Congratulations... Here's your bridge deed.

Thanks,

Jim

The inventory issue is adding havoc to all industries. Retail is giving huge discounts to get get rid of inventory . By getting rid of obsolete inventory, retail sells the product at discount. Therefore the margins shrink. This drives shareholder value and reinvestment. I'll be frank, I CANNOT understand how the Dow got to 12,000 points. At moment, we need to be concerned with deflation. Agreed with you on the economy.... the big difference between last year and this year is the lack of uncertainty.

It's four strokes! Who wants to buy a two or three year old bike and then have to stick a grand into the engine a month after you buy it? I would'nt buy a used four stroke from anyone other than a slow vet rider. Even then, you just bought a ticking time bomb. I don't know about everyone else, but I'm over rebuilding expensive dinosaurs!
