Is this just for data acquisition? Never seen anything like this before.

Never mind, just saw the name and model on there. GPS and data logger. You’d think they’d have something a bit more, maybe compact?

I just zoomed in on the picture and saw the name and model. Pretty interesting little device.

Seriously though, have we reached a point in our sport where they are doing too much and there’s too much technology in certain areas?

At first glance I thought it was similar to the display on an Alta.... I went from exited to disappointed real quick.

We use them in roadracing. All of us almost.. Smile

Gps based data acquisition, and depending on model, you can get loads of bike data in them. Tps, temp, brake pressure, suspension etc etc

Edit:

And this one pictured is the "dl" version so you can get all data from the ecu etc.

GPS data acquisition. Anything from suspension to engine settings. I’ve seen Honda set up receivers in a set of whoops and have the rider hit it multiple times with different settings, consult with the rider, and cross reference with the data. They can tell how much suspension stroke is being used on every inch of the track. So yes, that’s where we are with the sport right now. They did a lot of suspension testing with Kenny when he first signed using a similar set up. I don’t know how much the other teams are using it but Honda has been using this and a similar system for some time now. Welcome to the future.

It’s one them things like you plug into your car and your insurer can monitor your driving to get you to develop safe driving habits. I didn’t know Geico had those but I’ve seen ads for similar units from Progressive and Liberty Mutual.

It's disguised as "data acquisition". It's actually for downloading Pornhub.

Would it be reasonable to ban these types of GPS tech in racing? It certainly affects the quality of competition

Great! One more thing to make this sport completely unaffordable and out of reach!

Google is your friend.

If you read the responses I found that last night after zooming in on the picture.

You don’t need this to compete or even to just ride your bike. It’s an aftermarket part.

Yeah we should all go back to air cooled and twin shock bikes while we're at it. Not to mention get rid of closed face helmets because that's killing our sport as well.

Yeah, you're right Tarz, the decline of our sport can be attributed to bikes getting better.

It isn't the purchasing power of the middle class disappearing, it isn't riding areas getting shut down left and right, it isn't race promoters running 55 classes on a Saturday, it's because some engineers had the audacity to design better dirt bikes.

Outstanding take.

Dead on, anyone who doesn't like evolution or thinks it's bad is a moron. Price too high? Don't buy it, these dudes act like they are pros and need factory bikes. Enjoy riding, not everything is a pissing contest on who has pissed away the most money on a bike they can't even ride to its abilities.

I’m with Tarz. Simpler, slower, cheaper is just as fun and probably more inviting to the masses. The opposite is for the elite.

I dont think its the only reason, I think there are several other factors as well, some of them you mention, But Evolving is past what needs to be and could stand to take a couple steps back imo. Definitely 100% without a doubt for the masses and grassroots local Racing, and in my opinion for The pro's as well wich in my opinion is why the speed has increased and the severity of injuries has increased.
