What rider could get off the couch today, train hard until the first national and get podium or close?

May 19th is 4 weeks away. Whoever is chosen will have to already have been riding and training for a minimum of 2 months as of today (April 19th) to get on the podium or close. RD and RV are probably the only two who could do it since it seems like they are both still in good shape and have been riding.
This^ Talent wise, lots of guys got it, but it's the investment of training/time that puts them on the box..

I agree with JT, when I raced the vet race at GH a few weeks ago, RV was fast, but I don't think he could have gone that fast for 2, 30's

True Story: But back When Mickey Diamond was the 125 National Champion - DeCoster would ride with him at Honda Land and Run almost a second a lap faster.. Now its not 1989 anymore but after retiring he could of still come off the couch and won..
Who ever told you that was straight lying to you. In 1987, Decoster hardly rode, and Micky would smash when he did.

The last time I saw Decoster ride was 83, and O'mara lapped him in short time. him on a 500 and Johnny on a 125.

So happy there is one guy who have the balls to say it! Christophe Pourcel on a Kawasaki build by Mitch or on a Honda tuned by Mitch. And we erase his "crash" mind so he still knows how to ride a bike like only he does, but has no fear. Oh dreams Woohoo

I really hope that he races one of those 125cc events. His first pro year he raced one 125KX against the 250cc bikes in the world championship.

Looking at how poorly Bubba did in his last few races. And how long it has taken Reed to get back to being even a fringe top 10 guy.

RD is probably the only one. Doesnt take much to lose a bit of pace. Takes a hell of a lot to re-gain it.

I’d personally be more interested in two other scenarios... which guy could turn 1 fast 40 lap to qualify for a national? And then also who would field the fastest guys in the world National if there were no restrictions? As in no such thing as pro vs amateur, no mxgp vs nationals.... just 40 pure fastest riders in the world. We get close with MXDN but you miss out on a lot of fast guys as you’re capped with 3 per team obviously. I’ve always been curious.

I'd have to go with
1) Sean Hamblin
2) Austin Squires
3) Branden Jesseman

Carmichael might weigh twice what he did at his last race, but I'd bet a lot of money he'd run with the top guys.
Ya this was my first pick besides the obvious RD RV types.......K Dub as well.

Dungey, and he's the only one who could do it.

I'd like to say Windham, Canard, Stewart, or others. It's hard to imagine anyone except Dungey being able to come off the couch, have 3-4 weeks of training, then finishing on the box. You'd have to beat Tomac, Musquin, Anderson, and Baggett. Good luck to anyone not named Ryan Dungey in accomplishing that. I'd say JS7, but who knows how much he's been on the bike in general.

We saw Carmichael, Stanton and Everts at Everts and Friends. They still had the pace for a short race. But to ride with those GP/AMA guys on a 30 min moto is another thing.

Swanepoel, Albertson, Durham, Walker, Hahn bros, on 250’s and John Dowd at the wick could submit top five times.

We went to the transworld slam tune up race 4 or 5 years ago . Jl was there and I had high hopes for him....even in a mediocre field he was less than stellar. I was a little shocked/ dissapointed to say the least. Hed get wreckt these days.

But AMA motocross is weak....don't you read vital ? A decent A class rider could podium.
