I have been wondering what pit bike to buy to ride on homemade track. My budget for initial bike is around a grand. I have been looking at xr 80, xr 100, ttr 125 small and big wheel versions what’s your guys thoughts. My plan for now is to buy bbr springs for what ever I get and just ride it. Ttr looks easier to put 85 suspension on later especially if I get the big wheel. No 50s or 110s.

Since I have one, my vote is for a Kawasaki KLX140l. They have a full frame, electric start and KX85/100 forks are a simple bolt on. The "L" version is the supermini (KX100 size) version and has a better shock than the standard KLX140.
The Honda CRF150f is a good choice also, but it's really heavy for a supermini sized bike. It's a great bike, but it ways as much as a 450!

Thanks, yeah my buddy has the 140 small wheel with 85 forks and the big wheel shock and it is so fun to ride. Problem is those bikes are really expensive. The ttr looks pretty easy to swap 85 forks and rear end onto when I’m ready to drop a little more money. Plus bbr makes the frame cradle. I could get one for not crazy money. The 150 looks kinda big. The goal is to still try to keep it fun and halfway small.

I have 2 TTR125Ls - for 15 years each. Lotsa fun on the back yard track but also on the big tracks! The stock carbs are crap. The pilot jet is constantly clogging (due to ethanol - but way more than other jetted bikes) and the carbs leak all over the place. I have replaced them with Japanese Mikunis and that works better. But I would take an FI bike for sure (from another Vital thread, it appears that Honda makes one). Probably too expensive for you though.

My sister used to have a 125l and I rode it a lot and really liked it. I think I would like the small wheel better. Not sure tho.

Big bore xr100 on 80 wheels is my pit/play bike. The manual clutch is more fun but less than ideal for a pit bike in my opinion.

I'm not positive, but I don't think the TTR125 has a front disc brake while the TTR125L does. It's a good bike and the later models have electric start. From what I've seen, adding YZ85 suspension is a pretty easy upgrade too. The biggest downfall of the TTR125 is it's open cradle frame design. You will need to add a frame cradle for track use.

Yeah I noticed that. I have been looking into suspension swaps. I don’t think it’s too hard. And I want the clutch. Won’t be a pit bike but only a play bike.

I understand. At 52, I'm not as limber as I used to be and I'm just too cramped on a 110! I really like the mid sized playbikes. I've owned this KLX140l longer than any dirtbike I've ever had.

Oh yeah forsure. I don’t really want a 110 either. My buddy has a sick 140 like yours so the track we ride at his grandmas is set up for bigger sized bikes. I would not feel as good on a 110

I have picked out a 2000 ttr 125 small wheel to get me going. I think I’ll like it

Yeah they put off a lot of noise for sure, I put the fmf fatty and q silencer on mine helped some with noise. I wanted the extra protection from crashing by having better suspension for the not quite so good landings,,,

My friend and I built a TTR125LE for his son to ride.
Complete RM85 front end, 150 kit, cam, KX65 carb, lightened flywheel, frame cradle. Valved and sprung suspension.
It's a blast to ride, but still really slow.

My son had a TTR110, and I actually think it may be more fun to ride than the 125, certainly more fun than a stock 125.

That’s pretty sweet. I owned a 110 for like 5 years when I was a teen and really liked it but I think I like the midsize bikes better now

We've been slowly making a track /jumps out of a mound at a private spot near our house.
The Honda is a 96 xr200 and a ttr 125. The XR has a 21" wheel and I still end up banging my knee on those tight inside rutted turns. The TTR handles better, but the Xr is s caddy. Photos of my son. That jump is about 30'.

I got the XR for 900 bucks fully registered, and dare a 140/150 to try and catch me Smile
