Back in 2012 when i started racing in Germany, my sponsor had bought a Husky 511 SM .. it had 511 on it when i got there , and we ran it ever since.

This is on our CR500/TM300 Hybrid.

Many years ago I was number 782. I think it was Michael Young that ran the number back in the day. I remembered seeing it in a MX Racer article where he rode for team Primal Impulse for a day and I thought it looked cool.

My dad actually just sent me a picture of somebody else running my number and he said the guy used to race in my class on minis and copied it off me because he liked the way it looked.

When my brothers and me were young we started to race Go-karts and my dad just put the day of our birthday as our number which in my case is 19.

I loved it ever since and when I started riding I put 19 on my bike too ( my brothers changed their number) If I ever change my number I would use 377 for Pourcel, one of my favorite riders and I always tought it looked pretty cool.

58. It’s an acknowledgement to my grandfather. He got me my first bike when I was eight. When I was in high school, my grandmother passed due to having cancer. He lost his job shortly after and eventually sold the house I grew up in Carson and the cabin in Frazier Park to stay afloat. After losing everything, he bought me a 87 CR 125 for a highschool graduation gift. I couldn't believe it. After all these years I remember the sacrifices. He was 58 years old when it seemed like life couldn't get worse for us both.
58 is a simple reminder of sacrifice and thanks to him.

112 because at the time no pro had that. Still is pretty uncommon to see. Didn’t want to get asked at the track if I liked...

Mxboy12 on the 1st page ran your #. Stephon Roncada in 97 ran it. Pretty rare # tho, all 3 digit starting with two 1,s are good. Always a bummer when you have to run an X, over your #. Out of state races usually. Steve Boniface and a X games rider ran 531. I was like dammit everyone gonna , grab it now.

When I went to my first race in the late 80’s they gave me my birth year and fist initial, 69J . Hated that so switched to a three digit the next year 269. No real reason for the 2. When I started racing a few years ago in cross county / hare scrambles went with my anniversary 626.

752, not exactly sure what the real origin is but about 1.5 decades ago i met one of my best friends and we where really into the USA scene (which was somewhat harder to follow in early internet days, mostly through magazines). We somehow started to really enjoy triple digit numbers (which was essentially unseen in my area / local scene).

My friend mostly only rode pitbikes and hang around tracks but that was his number, so i kinda adopted it along the line as some kind of "team" tag type of thing. Funny enough now 15 years later he is racing that number and i am his helper / mechanic / whatever that tags along when he goes racing. (I'm sidelined from racing myself due to personal reasons / injury / health...)

#113

I’ve always been #13 for sports. My now 10 month old Boy took 5 years of doctors visits and amounts of money I won’t speak of to bring into this world. During the IVF process each egg/embryo is numbered. We ended up with 5 healthy embryos viable for transfer. He was #11. So now I ride with #113 a combination of our numbers. Just a little nod to my son who we fought hard for!

I run #909 because as a kid, my dad worked for the phone company and his van # was 909. He died in '83 when I was 12, so I run it as a tribute to him!!

#143 because my initials are the 14th and 13th letters in the alphabet.

Funny coincidence:
Using the same process my newborn son's number would be 513 (5th and 13th letters) and our street address is 513!

Some of these stories are fantastic. Lots of creativity!

Mine was simply what the AMA gave me and dropped the 6 to become 38 once I moved to big bikes.

65 was my karting number as a little kid. I read a Jody article in MXA for new racers to select a number with a 1 in it to make sure it fit on your plates πŸ˜‚. I didn’t feel an 8 year old deserved a 2 digit number, or know any better, so 651 I became when I moved to 2 wheels.
After losing my grandfather and father in successive years a couple years ago however on 1-16, I’m transitioning to 116 for a daily reminder.
Cool thread, some of you guys have some awesome stories!

15 after Joel Robert. Went to my first MX, a Trans AMA race, and saw a bunch of bikes I'd never heard of. Robert was on the ultra-trick works Suzuki and wore # 15 that year. He blew everyone away that day. I went home and slapped a 15 number plate on my SL70 and that was it.

415- first number I was ever assigned by ABA in like 1990. Just kinda’ stuck around.

I think my favorite name and number explanation when we did this topic awhile back back was the 314, the guys last name was Pie.

Was assigned 94 in 1985 by NBL bmx. First Mx bike in 1990 I ran 194. Few years later I dropped the 1 and ran 94 for a while. My son wa born in March of 94 so I ran 394 for a bit. Once again I dropped the 3 and been 94 since. My son runs 68, my birth year.

First number was 2/2H. Got it from CMC. My dad was 20H with them and was close with Stu, Sondra and Marc. The day I was born they immediately gave me 2H because I was β€œlittle 20H.” I dropped the H after I stopped really racing in 2012. After that it seemed like every time we went to the track more and more people were running 2. In 2018 I finally bought my dream bike, a yz250 l, from a fellow vital member. I rebuilt it and it felt like a great time to switch numbers. My wife and I became official March 2nd and got married on 9/23/2012, but my dads friend already ran 923 and I didn’t want a 3 digit anyways, so 23 it was.

All good, I don’t race anymore and still run numbers. I think bikes look weird without numbers but then again I’ve been called weird before too.
