YZ 490 craigslist ad LINKY

I'm having trouble ID-ing this bike. Looks like WR 500 rear plastic and front end. Exhaust looks odd for a 490 as well.

Any ideas?

EDIT: prolly should've put this in Old School

Death trap on wheels it's a 86-87 yz 250 chassis with a yz 490 engine a late 80's front end with a current generation yz 250 pipe and 91 92 rear plastics some other bits.

At first I was inclined to disagree with SmokinBro, but now I think he's really close to the truth.

SmokinBro, I think that is a 490 pipe. The way it curls out and up on the port side makes me think that. However, very good diagnosis by you. I think you're pretty close.

Oh, almost forgot...I had an 89 YZ250. It didn't look anything like that - nor did the 490. Come to think of it, I'm not even sure they made a 490 in 1989.

They made one in 90, so I'm guessing they did in 89. In 91 or 92 they added the newer YZ250-type plastic, changed the engine to silver, added USD forks and called it a WR500.

I love the "needs carb work." In CL terms that means:
-10psi compression
-Fouling plugs due to sucking gearbox dry from failed right side crank seal, while simultaneously detonating itself to death due to sucking air through failed left side crank seal
-an air filter covered in 1/2" of crust, which crumbles like birthday cake when you try to clean it...
-etc

Could it be an '89 YZ490 with 86-87 tank/shroud? Where's the shock reservoir?

Here's an '89 490. I think that was their last year before the WR took it's place.

How do you know that?? Maybe it really does just need carb work.

This looks like a bike that East Coast Vintage would be proud to sell as a "one of a kind". It just needs the tires shined up and spokes painted to be perfect for them.

Probably a legit 490 frame with all the other stuff added. You would think for all that work, he would've put a disc brake on the back.

Well, FWIW, it looks kinda cool.

Are the cylinder fins machined down to allow the tank to clear them?

More like sloppy angle-grinder job (enlarge for detail).

86 250S as hear in Aus the 87 250T had white shrouds not red. Might have been different in the US.
