My first MX Race was 1969......hooked ever since. Was drafted in 72 and went to Germany for 3 years and got a Dealer ride on a CZ with a mechanic and a van. Awesome times. Got a European discharge and had plans. Got hurt at the wrong time...no job yet and no place to live - so I came homeCool Oh well, been riding and racing for all these years. Now I ride for fun and the love of the sport. Only select MX events and some offroad. Don't really care where I finish as long as I can enjoy a beer when I'm done. Purchased a shifter kart last summer, now that is a real hoot!!

I just like to ride dirt bikes, track, trail, race, practice, watch, coach no need to pigeon hole into one category

Full time derelict. Part time poser. Anti-Rutledge-Ite. Likes large fluffy dogs, IPA’s, loud rock music and moonlit walks on overgrown motocross tracks....

Professional Practice-r. I'm ordering some Vinyl lettering for my Awning that says " Professional Practicing" for the lower part here soon lol. I told my wife I wanted to do at least 1 sort of race this year so we'll see...just trying to support the sport anyway I can.

Raced hard in the early and mid 90’s then evolved into pro practicer for the last 20 years with an occasional race sprinkled here and there with the buds.

I raced C and B classes for 5 years, moto ruled my life in that time, until I broke my back, then I settled down & practice rode for a year after that... the fun factor wasn’t quite there so I sold the bike and have been retired since. Maybe a comeback someday. We’ll see.

In the meantime I’ll keep reading vital and watching race highlights. Cool

Not sure why you denigrated the motodad/mechanic option. Nothing wrong with wrenching for your kids. I do that and race, but hate to see people who are new to the sport or followed their kids into it being put down. People constantly wonder why this sport doesn't grow. That's why.

I'm old...used to race a lot from the 70's thru the early 2000's. Now professional practice rider. Racing makes for a long ass day with few laps ridden. My wife only ever went to a few races, she said it was hot, dirty, and there was no decent place to pee. I kind of feel that way about racing now.

Was a racer. 9 years ago started growing this family of ours so racing ended in 2013. Now teaching the kids the joy of riding (mainly my son he has raced the PW class, and now has a YZ65), our middle girl rides the PW a little bit in our yard now. Child #3 is just getting around on her Strider bike at 3 years old.

I selected mechanic in your poll, but I don't push my kids to do crazy shit. Motocross is scary so I prefer them to use their heads, and just enjoy riding.

I do ride the practice track a little bit(less than a week ago as a matter of fact!)

Good poll. Interesting but not surprising less than 50% claim “racer” status. @BMR179 spells out why most don’t race or race much anymore.

Days too long with way too many classes, few laps, super short one session practice is why I rarely race AMA district.

Outlaw type series where no AMA palms need greased and the promoters promote fun over dollars is where it’s at.

Pretty much just a weekend warrior at best now after breaking my T3-T8 in my back a year ago lol. Just lucky to be able to ride at all anymore!

By the way, and for the record, I am that “mechanic/dad” even though I am a racer, a former racer from long ago.

Ain’t a chance in hell you’re going to get me to jump a lot of those jumps and I have seen many a dad/coach/mechanic say shit like “3rd gear, no problem, just do it,” while never having the stones to do it themselves.

We all know those Dads

Why I said it in fun, but there’s a grain of truth....lol

Cool poll... interesting to see how of y'all consider yourself to be racers.

I'm clearly in the minority as someone that rode a mini bike as a kid and then didn't ride again until I was an adult. At this point my riding consists of a dual-sport as a commuter/trail bike and dusting off the 125s a couple times a year for woods riding and/or local practice tracks.

"Just a fan", for me.

Pretty much spot on for me.

Raced from the time I was 4 and still try to race at least once a year now. Started a family in 2012 and riding slowed big time after having our second kid exactly 5 years ago today. Both kids are showing interest in riding so my focus has gone to their riding. I won't get much faster than what I am at this point and I've been riding for 27 years now. Right now is their time to do it so I will pick back up when they are a bit older.

So basically, in a weird way I'm a bit of the first five options.

MX racer turned pro practicer. Sometimes I feel like racing and then I remember 50/50 chance of either overwatering or a dust bowl so I pass.

I've raced 10 or so times over the years . Mid pack C rider on a good day . 10 years ago I showed up at a Racerx vet race at Byron after not having ridden for a few years and putted around in last place in 40 b/c . After that I said why ? Lol. I'm not a racer but I'll always be a fan.

I wish all of the above was an answer. Used to ride A class and rode/raced 5 days a week. Now I’m a Vet rider (33 now) and pretty much only ever practice, but also ride a lot of trails.

Racer. I just made my triumphant return to racing in the +50, right-handed, part-time-musician B class and went 1-1 for the win!

I'm also the dad mechanic for my daughter, if she ever wants to race again. She had a bad crash last month and I think she's a little spooked. We'll see.
