1979 when Tom Benolkin was running one on his CR125.

Can't answer a year for certain but I remember Reed talking on pulp recently about the difference it made when they started using them. Hence, early to mid 2000s would be my guess.

I bought one. Didn’t work. No hole shots for 16 races in a row. Returned it

Considering how important starts are now in Supercross, I think it would be cool to ban the starting devices (Supercross only). These guys are the best guys in the sport, so why make it easy on them? Take away starting devices and force them to be more precise in working the clutch the old fashioned way. It would probably reduce speed slightly into the first corner and make it just a tad bit safer.

Plus, it would be nice to see some Larry-Loop-outs already.....

I remember a picture of McGrath having the first one. They wrapped a towel around it when he was waiting on the starting line to hide it.

Piss off grates, start hooks and start mode electronics.

Yea, McGrath was the first rider I remember using one, and I think it was back in his Yamaha days.

I heard a story that Mitch Payton had been producing ones similar to what we see today and putting them on factory bikes. He hadn’t patented them yet. Then this little company from the Midwest caught wind, patented the design, and made Mitch real upset...

That would’ve been 2000-2002 I believe.

Had one since the 70's, its called clutch&throttle... Wink
Full disclosure, I've never used one..didnt need it and I also don't care for the grates or concrete starts , they're called dirt bikes for a reason.

I wish they would ban them, and make riders use technique

No start devices. No RPM lights. No grates. Ban them from professional racing. Taking the skill out of it is a great way for the whole pack to enter the first turn at the same time. Plus, it's a professional sport. Why would we want to limit the utilization of skill?

Thats pretty cool. What happen in between? No one else saw the benefit for another 23-24 years?
Is that snow in the back ground? Damn, what race was that?
