Went riding on Sunday and was supposed to pick up a new 18 TM 300MX smoker on the way home. I went for one last lap and things went a bit sideways..

I was having fun on the 100’ tabletop -step-down and something went wrong on the landing, best I can piece together is my left hand blew off the bars and I went down hard instantly on my left side. I remember going down, and then waking up from a nice peaceful dream, feeling went from great to pretty damn bad in an awful hurry.

Long story short I’ve been in the hospital ever since, transferred twice and awaiting a surgery on my humerus, which is broken in about 6 or 7 pieces at the top where it goes into the shoulder socket and just below.

Total tally is:
Broken sternum
5 broken ribs
Broken C7 vertebrae
Broken humerus
Punctured lung
Concussion

It’s actually my first surgery ever, anyone had one like this before that they can share their experience with? I’m self employed so this isn’t looking good in regards to down time from work.

Oh my god. Just talk with a social worker at the hospital and explain your situation. There may be some helpful programs you can take advantage of to off-set costs.....

Otherwise from the surgical standpoint just try to comply with the plan of care being set for you. Early mobility, pain control etc....good luck man. Don’t consult doctor google. It will make you insane.

Get better, bro! That sucks! Sounds like you had a pretty get off. Praying for a speedy recovery.

Every time I say "one more lap", I go down hard. I started saying "two more" and then quitting before the second lap. So far it has worked out for my body.

Trade the humerus for a tib/fib, and that is about the same as what I went through about 20 years ago. First 2 weeks were pretty miserable, and I wasn't able to get back to work for about 6 weeks. Even after 6 weeks, it was a tough go at work for quite a while.
Good luck.

I've had most of those, heck, most of those at the same time. I've had the broken sternum, broken ribs, punctured lung, and concussion at the same time, but mine came along with a separated shoulder and dislocated hip, instead of the leg and back. I really, really didn't want to get off the couch for a week, but was back working about a week and a half later, albeit barely able to move. Oh ya, and seriously, I started a new job with that one. My first day was supposed to be the day after I got hurt, so I called and bought myself some time. So... my first day was me showing up with my arm in a sling and walking with the help of a crutch, LOL. Good times.

We've all been there, it sucks. The ribs though, I've broken mine several times. Those are the gift that keep on giving... hehehehe. Best of luck with your recovery, you'll be down at the dealer cutting a check on a new bike before you know it.

Damn, I’m sorry to hear you got banged up...., hopefully you’ll heal up quick bub! As for being self employed, yes there are programs that you can take advantage of due to your circumstances. As mentioned earlier, talk to a social worker and get the wheels turning ASAP. It may not be a ton of help, but you work hard and deserve a helping hand when you’re down. Best of luck!

Sucks man but they will get you all fixed up.

What gear did you have on? Chest pro or neck brace?

Sucks to hear. A compound fracture of my left ankle caused an early end to my military career, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise and things have certainly worked out for the better. I hope you've got some back pocket to help with expenses until you're back to fitness.

One thing I would be super wary of from the outset, is an over-reliance on pain medication. Take as little as you can handle as the risk of opiod addiction is very real - I hate those things. I was amazed at what my wife was given following surgery in New York last year, and threw them out as soon as she didn't need them anymore (about 10 days after surgery).

From what she told me, that one wasn’t a Vital donation. It was that gay porn on the sidebar you were asking about, and the 1-900-HOT-GUYS phone line charges you were racking up.

Broke my humerus in 08 and tore up my rotator cuff. Same deal, self employed. It's not fun, make sure you do the rehab, your injury is far worse, I didn't do the rehab like I should have and went back to work way too soon, now my range of motion sucks. I hate to say this, but your doctor bills are going to be nuts, get on the state plan asap, I made too much and had to pay out of pocket, my bills were over 30k. Your going to hit six figures with everything you got going on, and there's no hiding from the state, they WILL take money right out of your bank account, your only relief may be filing bankruptcy. Sorry man, wish I had better news....

I almost forgot two things, first off, if you've never been under, make sure someone watches you closely when they bring you out of it, I had never been under before and when I woke up apparently I freaked out and took a few staff members to hold me down, most likely ruined all the work done on my rotator cuff right then and there. That may be why it's so bad. The doctors say it didn't hurt anything, but that was most likely to cover their ass. Secondly, do NOT tell them it was a dirt bike accident, I doubt it will matter since your on your own, but I do know private insurance can deny you for doing dangerous things, which of course dirt bikes fall under. Good luck, I hope everything turns out OK for ya. And don't get too depressed, your still breathing. It could've been worse

Damn that's a tough list, especially being self employed. Best of luck to you and sending out healing vibes your way.

Seriously though I hope it works out smoothly mate.
I had my first surgery ever last year and actually enjoyed it. Best sleepover. Lights out and then lights on.

His location is listed as Canada. I don't think this scenario is likely for him.
