Lackey from the beginning was in very good physical condition, but when he won the world championship is when he was better, you see in this photo in Carlsbad 1983

That bottom picture of Brad at the 83 USGP ( the only GP he did after the 82 WC, I think) shows a bloke that had Not let himself 'go to seed' after , basically, retiring.

Another thing I remember that involved him was Arai , or perhaps another batch of medicos testing head / brain temperatures within a Helmet reached during a moto. I think that after viewing the data, the medicos said it was insane - that the temperatures reached and sustained, should / would basically Kill a person! Once again, another example of what the mind / determination can do, over matter.

PS - Is that Jim Pomeroy on the left at the Husky / Tiblin training camp? I know that riders other than Husky guys would / could attend them.

Smez - I should have put 500 GP!

I had in the back of my mind that he'd done a 250 GP a few years later, but really thought I was imagining things!

Thanks for the pictures, and easing my mind - I thought I was getting a bit 'doolally' as I get older! Dizzy

And we think things are rough nowadaysPinch "A spectator broke Noyce's hand with a stick". And Brad had to hang close to a local boy to keep fans from throwing bottles and rocks at him. Our young ones don't know what "tough" is. I'm really glad Stewart wasn't racing the GP's back then. Things must have really changed from the late 70's to the early 80's when I was over there...cause it was all great...no matter who won. The only places that were iffy were Soviet bloc countries.

It came out years later that it wasn’t a fan with a stick. Graham hit a battery pack that a trackside photographer was carrying.

Yes, I was there in 1980. Here is a pic during Saturday AM practice just after track walk. (notice the grass height all the way around the track) In those days the pros and the fans could walk the track at the same time. I thought is was unbelievable that I could walk a section with Roger Decoster, then with Rick Burgett, Gerritt Wolsink, Bob Hannah, and Mark Barnett.

Lackey still is a bad dude. He's put in some exhilarating rides at the Diamond Don's vintage national.

Also remember Lackey was in the "what's fast today won't be fast tomorrow" stage of motocross where from 75-80s, the bikes were changing so rapidly. He went from riding factory KX450 with zero suspension to winning the title in 82 with suspension almost parallel to today's travel measurements.

Speaking of Lackey, I found this gem on another forum the other day. Pretty cool history of Lackey and his career, in addition to some coverage of the world scene and trans-AMA days.

First...great group of shots, but the guy on the older Husky with yellow numberless plates in the white helmet is NOT Brad Lackey.

Second...yes, Lackey was a badass. When he was "on" nobody could beat him, but was also one of the nicest guys ever in the sport. I met him as a 16-year old kid (me) at a Rio Bravo Trans-AM many moons ago (the same weekend the pic of Wyman Priddy in my avatar was taken), and he was very cool. You didn't see the huge egos so much as you do today.

Yes, in the Trans USA/Trans AMA series. This series used to be a huge deal with top AMA and FIM Grand Prix stars racing each other.

Bad? you bet. My first motocross race was I think fall of 1969, on my '69 250 CZ, under the bridge at Marysville. But what I really remember about that day is Bad Brad, on an orange tank pickle pipe CZ, just crushing the whoops. 6 inch travel forks, 4 inch travel rear, throttle wide open, quasar fast, feet on the pegs about half the time. Just wow.

I was lucky enough to have attended the '82 GP at Ettelbruck when Brad won the title.

He was very focused and a real "hard man" (to use an Brit phrase).

He really earned it...his whole career.
