He missed the finish line when Cooper passed him and hence missed the timing gate that keeps track of the transponders. It essentially put him -1 lap.

When Cooper ran him off the track he had to go around the timing and scoring line but I'm pretty sure he still finished 4th but timing didn't show that?

He needs to quit looking over his shoulder so much and just protect his line. He was so preoccupied with Cooper that he basically set himself up.
