Hi everyone,

Last week I crashed my dirt bike and landed on my shoulder pretty hard. The first two days I was only able to move my arm about 4-5 inches from my side with my arm hanging down. Over the following few days I was able to get my arm up to chest level but yesterday it felt so bad and I'm back to extremely limited range of motion. I think I probably messed with it too much too soon. Has anyone fallen on their arm so bad they couldn't move it due to should pain? I know I don't have any broken bones since that's what the X-ray showed. The pain is mostly coming from the shoulder blade area and the very front upper part of the shoulder. Also did you get surgery? Thanks in advance, I'm freaking out since I have to get back to work soon and I just don't know what to expect.

I prescribe a real doctor. And maybe a second opinion.

Had the same thing last winter and was a torn rotator cuff, 3 weeks of icing and little movement and then just did resistance band exercises.

THATS GREAT TO HEAR! I'm really just looking for hope. From what I read "online" it appears that im probably going to lose my arm for good

I don't get why you just didn't go see a doctor on the day it happened. If you put ice on it and it doesn't help there's obviously something wrong.

Always get two opinions. Your MRI will show you what's wrong. From there the doctor will give you your options. Either time and rest will take care of your problem or surgery.

Could be nerve related if you don't have any broken bones. That takes time to heal and sometime it never gets back to 100%.

Reading things online is possibly the worst thing you can do when it comes to medical stuff. What you think you have and what you have are two different things. Anxiety gets the best of you and you start freaking out Googling more stuff that leads to more stuff.

You then go to the doctors and find out it's nothing major and that all you need is over the counter Tylenol.

I actually went to the ER that same day since I was coughing up blood. The X-rays looks fine. Ice was helping initially but I think the every ten minute stength/progress check probably did more harm then good.

I've had something happen similar probably 5 years ago. I could barely lift my arm enough to change my own shirt for a few weeks. I toughed it out and over time it healed for the most part, but I still don't feel like I have full range of motion.
I'd go get an MRI if I were you.

I'd say constantly trying to move it every ten minutes did not help your situation.

If there's no inflammation, have you tried heat instead of ice? Heat will bring blood to the area.

Read up on it. Ice is not always the answer. Look into that and see if it helps.

Back to riding without surgery sounds like a good plan to me.

Ii will tell ya that it would be best to consult a specialist. They ought to instruct you to give it 6 to 8 weeks and you will probably discover that it will feel fine despite the damage. Then make your decision regarding repair.

Yeah I get over obsessed. With riding it's good but injuries not so much.

I can't really see the swelling but I feel the tightness. It feel like something just needs to pop back into alignment. Regardless I've been going into the spa to loosen things up. Then it's back to icing.

Haha. Yeah that's what I was thinking they would probably say. "Wait until it feels better, and then see if you want surgery."

If things are tight put a heat pad on it. 20 minutes on 20 minutes off. Repeat that process for a while and it should help.

Ice won't do much for that. If it's swollen then yes it'll help the swelling go down.

If you feel like something needs to be pulled back into place you could of pulled a muscle. Not much you can do for that except rest.

I'll give that a shot. I did have ice/heat packs but I always use them as ice.

As for the tightness, it feels like a knuckle that won't pop. I'll prop my arm on a table and bend over to stretch it out and it just gets tight and painful. It feels like something is either going to go back in place or my tendon is going to rip in half. Ice and heat is probably a better approach :-/

Sounds muscle related.

If you have someone at home ask them to massage that area. If you don't have anyone try using a tennis ball.

Put it on the area where the pain is and either lay on the floor for a while or sit on a couch/chair with the ball in the back. Apply pressure not to the point that it hurts but enough that it's tolerable and roll the ball on the area.

I've never tried that technic but some people swear that it works/helps.

Yes. Saw a doctor immediately. X ray showed nothing however physical testing for torn rotator suggested 1 or more massive tears. MRI confirmed it. Completely fucked rotator.

Luckily a gifted surgeon was able to help me or I would have been sol.

Still recovering with rehab and special stretching and strengthening exercises. This was 3 years ago in July.

I hope yours isn't the same. It's a bitch.

I have a lacrosse ball. Works wonders on the shoulders. Well not on this one but it does feel good while I'm doing it

Injury July12 surgery August 28 however it was suggested to do it sooner as muscle atrophy was a concern but the surgeon I wanted was in Europe for a month. I waited for him and it was the right move.

My arm was fucked. I had to pick it up and place it where I wanted it to go. Part of the problem was my bicep released as well so it was all bunched up by my forearm so voluntary movement was minimal. Arm just hung there for 6 weeks.

Wow man. Sounds rough. A few days ago I was able to turn on a light switch, painfully, but I did it. That all of course changed yesterday when it got worse. Now I can't even put my hand in my pocket.

I can't really see the swelling but I feel the tightness. It feel like something just needs to pop back into alignment. Regardless I've been going into the spa to loosen things up. Then it's back to icing.

You might have an AC separation or separated shoulder... This is just from picking through the posts.

Did you feel it pop in and out of place? That's the feeling I would get when you describe, "feels like a knuckle that needs to crack".

I'd suggested an X-ray and MRI ASAP. Also go to a sports specialist not a random doctor.

As for the tightness, it feels like a knuckle that won't pop. I'll prop my arm on a table and bend over to stretch it out and it just gets tight and painful. It feels like something is either going to go back in place or my tendon is going to rip in half. Ice and heat is probably a better approach :-/

Did you feel it pop in and out of place? That's the feeling I would get when you describe, "feels like a knuckle that needs to crack".

I'd suggested an X-ray and MRI ASAP. Also go to a sports specialist not a random doctor.
Thanks for the input. From what I've researched it's probably a shoulder separation from what I can tell. I'm hoping after I get the MRI that it's just small tears all over the shoulder from the trauma. As for the popping, no it doesn't really pop unless I grab a bar and pull hard on it. It felt really good to do that while it was happening but I think that was inflaming it which is ultimately cuasing some of the stiffness. And sports specialist for sure. I'm in Long Beach Ca, any recommendations?
