my favorite racer of all time. I didn't even want to believe that, because I'm a late 80's fanatic (when I was 14). but something about V2, he just had a style and shark-like demeanor, I have to look back and say, he was in many ways my favorite to watch line up at the gate.

not to take away from all the mechanical advice posts (ahem).

2nd place amateur guys are 1st place pro guys cuz they learn how to handle adversity as a kid which is twice as hard so when they go pro with top equipment theyre killers. Getting your ass kicked... Every. Single. Race. Sux enough as an adult, when your a kid its the end of the world. It builds tough kids that excel under pressure and when problems arise they dont unravel like Tomac. RV has probably been my favorite racer to watch. Most days he was untouchable. Rode around the likes of Dungey, Reed, Stew the best of them. He believed he was going to win every time he lines up. And I thought he was going to as well.

I respected his accomplishments when he was a racer, but never really cared much for his personality or lack there of. Now, the dude is a frickin riot... Apparently that's how he always was behind closed doors; but how were we the fans ever supposed to know?? Crazy how robotic the factory level guys can become.. Praying the likes of Plessinger and Cianciarulo retain their fun, outgoing personalities when real big bike pressure sets in..

I think I know what you’re saying. I remember introducing non-Moto buddies to sx in that time period and every single one of them decided on their own that Villopoto was easily the best guy in the 450 class. That was the outside perspective, anyways. Maybe sometimes we overlook that because of McGrath years, Carmichael, etc. but Villopoto was consistently intense.

Villopoto hated the media, hated during all the PR shit he just wanted to win and go home, understandably so, these guys have a mic shoved in their face before they get a chance to breathe.


But yeah Vilopoto is one of the greats, wouls loved to see stew and him at their best.

I got to see RV killing it on 60's locally then 80's he even razzed me one time at this monroe arenacross race. For having carbon fiber fork guards on my yz 125 in early 02. After eavesdropping on this conversation I had with a local pro telling me races are won in the corners.

Lol u missed what I said. 2nd place guys like RV-Alessi, Dungey-B Class rider, Webb-Cianciarulo dont unravel like riders who won their whole lives like Tomac. They learn how to deal with adversity when its extra tough-as kids. There is a period also.

Rv was a very fast rider but more then that he was unwilling to accept defeat. He always gave it 110% and turned the knob up to whatever it took tonget the job done. He got burned out too soon as a result though. I would like to have seen him want to race the gp’s.

He also got hurt a fair amount from those tactics. I’ve always been super impressed that he won 4 SX championships in a row. That takes a huge amount of hard work and a bit of luck too

I watched him once at Red Bud get a midpack start, then the next two corners after the ski jump banzai around many riders seemingly risking it all. Next lap he was 3rd and onto the front.

yes I can't argue that. Johnson was the greatest in many ways. if you watch him in SX videos from 1989 when he was on a 5 race tear, watch the details in his riding - his race craft was next level. he was clearly evolving into the next generation. what we never saw, and what would have been historic to this day, was his battle with Bradshaw. we never lost a better rivalry, it would have been epic.

I don't know about you guys, I met him a few times and he always took time to talk to me and my boys. He even took us into the race trailer at the Minneapolis sx and chatted for like ten minutes. Then the mxdn at Budds.... Wow! Seeing him KILL EVERYONE and watching rc do those sideways feet out dealios was EPIC! Best vacation I've had without the kids. I think Ryan's alright and you guys just don't like it when rider's don't post every shit they take on fucking Facebook and Instagram. Real men let others judge them, they don't talk about themselves....

When I was in the US I rode in California, I felt like I was on fire that day, riding so well.. then RV blew past me like I was going the opposite direction.. I have never been so blown away in my life, I looked up a second later and he was gone.. amazing rider

Hard to argue with that. I just wish we saw him healthy for more outdoor championships. His outdoor speed was unreal. I’ll never forget that pass he put on going downhill at Thunder Valley.
