I ride a 2stroke because it is the most fun. The cost of owning a 2stroke Yamaha is a huge bonus. I run a Yamaha because, well......I have yet to ride something I liked and trusted more. My YZ's have never let me down either. I also don't need anything faster.......my bike is the last thing holding me back.
The 09 YZ450 was one of my favorite bikes ever.
This bike has more torque than anything outside of an Alta, so less clutch work and the WR gearbox hardly ever needs shifting. It has no hit which is exactly what I want. I also race off road and it helps rather than hurts in spite of what must would assume that a big bore is a handicap, even in long races it saves energy.
I rode a 125, 250 and 300 2t, and the 350, 390, 430 and 480 at the Beta demo and came away with the same conclusion, the bigger it is the easier, and the 4t's track (front end especially) so much superior to the 2t's, and a 2t is just too much disadvantage in MX for me.
Because it gets me out of more shit than it gets me into.
If you are:
Only doing local stuff.
Don't care where you finish.
= 125.
If you are:
Only doing local stuff.
Kinda care where you finish.
Weigh 200 or more.
Like 2 strokes.
= 250 smoker
If you are:
Under 200.
Care where you finish and love high rpms but a 250f isn't enough.
= 350
If you are:
Wanting to be on par power wise with the majority racing fast vet class races.
Over 200.
= 450
Ideally, 1 of each. Lol.
I have a 17 crf 450 fwiw..
I'm fat, but I want a 150 pretty bad. I've never owned a 150 or a 350. 350 for me is fun, but if I have a 350, I might as well have the 450 so I'm not at a displacement disadvantage, on top of being fat.
Off the couch, only a few rides on my "new" bike after a 2 year hiatus, I pulled a 14th in one Moto at baja. I genuinely feel if I were in shape and had some seat time, I could've made it happen. 30 extra pounds from where I'm comfy definitely doesn't help. However, no way in hell I could've gotten 14th in a Moto in +30 on anything less than a 450 at my weight in that kind of sand.
Now look at Dave Jones in I think +45 and +50. He's incredibly fit and rides like an 06 kx250 and still can qualify for Loretta's on it.
If I ever make Loretta's again, I will race the ranch on a small bore bike with mixed gas, or for the hell of it, a cr500af. If I made it there, I'm way past giving a damn what place I get there.. lol
My next trail bike will be a Husky 300 w/TPI...I am over messing with jetting...😬
Will be hopefully doing some races on it this fall.
Soon to be 52 - 6'1" @ 230lbs.. Really like the 18 CRF450r as a complete package.
Pit Row
And you beat my 250sx to the first turn in +25A but let's not talk about that, lol
I love my 15' 250sx, I put money into the suspension but just the basics other than that. Little over 100 hours now and it has been a great bike. I don't feel like it holds me back anywhere on the track. If I was a better rider my results would improve, haha
2018 ktm250sxf.....250f’s are great one tight/ stadium tracks and this bike is very maneuverable and quick
2014 Yamaha YZ250.....just for fun!
I'm 40 years old, 6'1" tall, 195lbs (no gear) and ride a Husqvarna TC250 two stroke. Why? After riding a 250F for a number of years I got a loaner YZ250 for a bit. Was fun. Then back to my 250F. 250F was starting getting old and it was new bike time. Kept thinking about the two stroke, bought a 2013 250SX. What an animal of a bike, loved it though, but a raw, vibrating, unruly beastie. At one point it was out of commission for a few and I had a loaner Suzuki 250F. Rode that Suzook 250F that for a year or so, then back on the 250SX, yeah more fun. 2017 KTM/Husky 2-strokes come out, all new bikes from the wheels up. Get a 2017 TC250, holy shit best MX bike I've ever ridden. Light, responsive, smooth, great power, woo the complete package.
I get to ride current-gen 250F's often enough to know I don't want another one. Easy to ride but pretty boring. That whole no soul thing. 450's for MX don't do a lot for me either. They feel so sluggish and slow handling, plus when something breaks on them, it's a fortune (have two blown 450 motors in the garage off my supermoto).
125's are pissah fun to ride but at my height/weight having only a 125 mx bike doesn't make sense for me.
So there ya go. Hope that helps. Ultimately a huge range of choices out there, and any modern bike is a marvel of motocross radness. Get what speaks to you. Braaaapt.
For me both are equally fun to ride but in different ways. when I only want to shift a couple times a moto I go for the 4T
I raced 500’s for many years so I am not a high RPM rever like todays 250/350 and torque bottom & mid power of a 450 suites best.
