19' ktm 300xc. Harescrambles/GP's are more of my primary intention, but I've taken it out on more mx open rides. I wanted a two stroke for the ease of doing a rebuild myself. I'm not very fast so the XC valving still works fine for me on the track. The Xc's are pretty mellow power wise and I like having the e-start as well.

18 YZ125 because it’s so much fun to ride, makes me feel like I’m going fast, looks, sounds & smells great.

Backed down to a 125 after an accident on my 450. 13 yrs on a 450 and never had one toss me on a mishap like this last time. With a leg full of titanium I am on the 125 for the shear lack of power to limit my riding level, plus its a kick in the ass and keeps me riding. Strongly considering getting on a 250f though...

I'm 35 and ride a 19 YZ250. I can't afford to have multiple bikes at this time, so I have the one that does it all.

I ride a 2stroke because it is the most fun. The cost of owning a 2stroke Yamaha is a huge bonus. I run a Yamaha because, well......I have yet to ride something I liked and trusted more. My YZ's have never let me down either. I also don't need anything faster.......my bike is the last thing holding me back.

Sold my 19' yami to graduate college. Went and picked up my 75 hour 09' yz450f from my parents house. Did a suspension job and checked the valves. 23 years old, lift in the gym religiously, 6'3 and 200lbs wet. 450 is my only option.

Things could be worse, I'm still ridingSmile

2009 yz450 is a great bike, fully capable. I raced one for years and won a lot of races on it. No complaints.
Same!

The 09 YZ450 was one of my favorite bikes ever.

LOL, that's one accurate description--my 13 CRF450 put me out cold a couple years ago, in a total WWF body slam from what my buddies said, but since it happened so fast and I don't remember a damn thing, I don't have too many lingering fears!

A Beta 500 (480) RS. Because I want a do it all bike, and this bike does everything well including Dual Sport. I ride mostly MX practice and want to do the best I can the easiest way possible. I'm 61 and 215lbs. and don't ride near enough to stay in shape anymore.
This bike has more torque than anything outside of an Alta, so less clutch work and the WR gearbox hardly ever needs shifting. It has no hit which is exactly what I want. I also race off road and it helps rather than hurts in spite of what must would assume that a big bore is a handicap, even in long races it saves energy.
I rode a 125, 250 and 300 2t, and the 350, 390, 430 and 480 at the Beta demo and came away with the same conclusion, the bigger it is the easier, and the 4t's track (front end especially) so much superior to the 2t's, and a 2t is just too much disadvantage in MX for me.

18 FC350. Can ride it much harder, longer, than on my 13 CRF450r. So much lighter, turns better, better brakes, majik button. I've not yet felt like the bike was riding me, and the 450 was doing that a lot this year. 56 YO Vet Int. Haven't raced the 350 yet. Tomorrow will be first time at PIR TNMX.

You and me Hammer! 56 yrs young and rocking the 2018 FC350. Love the bike too for the same reasons.

I'll be 34 soon.. Been doing this stuff since I was 19.. here's my take.. for Moto only..

If you are:
Only doing local stuff.
Don't care where you finish.
= 125.

If you are:
Only doing local stuff.
Kinda care where you finish.
Weigh 200 or more.
Like 2 strokes.
= 250 smoker

If you are:
Under 200.
Care where you finish and love high rpms but a 250f isn't enough.
= 350

If you are:
Wanting to be on par power wise with the majority racing fast vet class races.
Over 200.
= 450

Ideally, 1 of each. Lol.

I have a 17 crf 450 fwiw..

I'm fat, but I want a 150 pretty bad. I've never owned a 150 or a 350. 350 for me is fun, but if I have a 350, I might as well have the 450 so I'm not at a displacement disadvantage, on top of being fat.

Off the couch, only a few rides on my "new" bike after a 2 year hiatus, I pulled a 14th in one Moto at baja. I genuinely feel if I were in shape and had some seat time, I could've made it happen. 30 extra pounds from where I'm comfy definitely doesn't help. However, no way in hell I could've gotten 14th in a Moto in +30 on anything less than a 450 at my weight in that kind of sand.

Now look at Dave Jones in I think +45 and +50. He's incredibly fit and rides like an 06 kx250 and still can qualify for Loretta's on it.

If I ever make Loretta's again, I will race the ranch on a small bore bike with mixed gas, or for the hell of it, a cr500af. If I made it there, I'm way past giving a damn what place I get there.. lol

2017 YZ450F with Dick's Racing suspension and a Rekluse Radius CX. Super fun bike...I'd love e-start, but not keen on giving up my IMS 2.9 gal tank to get it...

My next trail bike will be a Husky 300 w/TPI...I am over messing with jetting...😬

Grinning Same here. Broken bones, stitches & a couple of concussions since my 1st 450 in 05, but I still keep a 450 in the stable.
Will be hopefully doing some races on it this fall.
Soon to be 52 - 6'1" @ 230lbs.. Really like the 18 CRF450r as a complete package.

A 125 because it’s more fun than anything else. Sunday I raced 30 A and went from 15th to 3rd in moto 1 and 7th to 2nd in moto 2. Spring Creek doesn’t pay any classes but 250 A and 450 A, and I would’ve been by myself in 250 A. I’d rather battle in a fun class on a 125 instead of walk away on a 450.
Watched you at swan mx in Texas a few weeks ago . . . Not only is that 125 fun for you, it's fun for the spectators too! You had that sucker singing!

And you beat my 250sx to the first turn in +25A but let's not talk about that, lol

I love my 15' 250sx, I put money into the suspension but just the basics other than that. Little over 100 hours now and it has been a great bike. I don't feel like it holds me back anywhere on the track. If I was a better rider my results would improve, haha

Current model YZ 250F is the best bike I’ve ever ridden. I’m faster on a 450 though.

Whoops. Just realized I didn't answer the question(s) in the post title. Let's try this again.

I'm 40 years old, 6'1" tall, 195lbs (no gear) and ride a Husqvarna TC250 two stroke. Why? After riding a 250F for a number of years I got a loaner YZ250 for a bit. Was fun. Then back to my 250F. 250F was starting getting old and it was new bike time. Kept thinking about the two stroke, bought a 2013 250SX. What an animal of a bike, loved it though, but a raw, vibrating, unruly beastie. At one point it was out of commission for a few and I had a loaner Suzuki 250F. Rode that Suzook 250F that for a year or so, then back on the 250SX, yeah more fun. 2017 KTM/Husky 2-strokes come out, all new bikes from the wheels up. Get a 2017 TC250, holy shit best MX bike I've ever ridden. Light, responsive, smooth, great power, woo the complete package.

I get to ride current-gen 250F's often enough to know I don't want another one. Easy to ride but pretty boring. That whole no soul thing. 450's for MX don't do a lot for me either. They feel so sluggish and slow handling, plus when something breaks on them, it's a fortune (have two blown 450 motors in the garage off my supermoto).

125's are pissah fun to ride but at my height/weight having only a 125 mx bike doesn't make sense for me.

So there ya go. Hope that helps. Ultimately a huge range of choices out there, and any modern bike is a marvel of motocross radness. Get what speaks to you. Braaaapt.

I’m 52,6’2” and 215 pounds,I ride and race a 2019 ktm 350 sxf which feels like a comfortable pair of old slippers,I put a K Tech spring conversion in the fork and had the other fork revalved for my weight and ability, the rear shock has the bladder conversion, revalved and a 48 spring.I have a ktm tall seat, which is partly for the firmer foam as much as the extra bit of height,Renthal 997 twinwalls and have replaced the rubbers on the bar mounts for alloy cones, one tooth extra on the rear sprocket and she’s just about perfect for me.

250 2T and 450!
For me both are equally fun to ride but in different ways. when I only want to shift a couple times a moto I go for the 4T Smile

Fc350, I don’t think there is any disadvantage against 450’s off the start. I race it in open a and vets and rarely get worse the 3rd out of the first corner.

I am 35. Race a 15 YZ250 in vet b. Seriously thought about going to a new 450 but love how light and nimble my bike is. Am contemplating having pr2 build me a stock bore size 270 stroker to even out the power field some.

I raced 500’s for many years so I am not a high RPM rever like todays 250/350 and torque bottom & mid power of a 450 suites best.

17' KX450F in +30B. I raced a 12' 350sxf last year in +25 and did fine but long straights or up hill rollers Id be caught or pulled every time. That being said in a few years when I get a new bike I may end up getting a 350 again . For a 5'7 165lb guy a 450 is more than enough.
