Yep, racing in Europe is not cheap and you have to be really fast or have really good connections to make any money out of it. Your your 40 000€ pretty much on ball park on the privateer EMX250 budget.

EMX250 privateer style (from Finland. Licence, eating and training track fees not included)Smile
- bikes: 0 - 2000€ / bike. At this level you usually are getting the bikes for loan or for rent from importer or shop)
- parts: 7000€ (discounted price from importer or shop)
- gear: 0€, usually at this level you get those for free.
- fuel, tire, oils: 2500€
- mechanic: 2500€ / month (actually paying the taxes and other stuff)
- camping etc. 500/ month (sleeping in your van)
- sign up and transponder rent: 1015€ / race
- fuel for you van: 3200€ (around 20 000 km)
- ferry tickets (MXGP of GB and from Finland to Germany & back): 1500 €
- toll roads: ? (for example from Trentino to Talavera de la Reina 110€)
30 000 - 60 000€

The other option is to buy your spot on a team (team takes care of building a competitive bike).
Full support (few bikes, mechanic, transportation, place to live, training ect.)
60 000 - 100 000€

Just race support (you live and train home and just fly to the races)
25 000 - 50 000€ plus travel expenses for mechanic & rider around 1300 - 2000€ per race
35 000 - 70 000€
Thank you very much for the info, very much appreciated!

A question on the sign up and transponder rent under EMX250 privateer style: I'm surprised by this number, i thought that the GP fee was ~1000 euro but the EMX classes had an entry fee of 300 euro?

And a question regarding how these cost relate to other classes:
Would EMX300 be similar in costs (just less races)?
And would the costs for a wildcard GP MX2 privateer style rider be much higher compared to EMX250? And if so due to what (next to the increase in entry fee obviously)?

Again, thanks for the info.

Yep, you are correct on the EMX sign up price. Accidentally took the MXGP/MX2 number there, sorry!

Last year expenses were around 65000 for a EMX250 rider.
Our team has been able to supply our guys with free bikes as we have great relationship with Finnish Honda and our national series have been build in a way that guys could race EMX and still win the Finnish championship.

Again, thanks for the info MBR!

Going back to the start of the discussion (riders only having logos of jersey manufacturer and bike manufacturers on their outfit) & looking at the numbers you provided: I would imagine a typical EMX rider would be very happy if a company offered 10k to become main sponsor?

Even a little less would do. If anyone is interested I got plenty of space available on EMX150 European champion Emil Weckman's jersey / helmet.

35 000 - 70 000€
Looking at this list and re-doing it for a season of GP's in MX2, only doing the European rounds (12, basically multiplied some of the costs to increase it for the additional races):

- bikes: 4 bikes @ after resale net cost 2.500= 10.000
- parts = 10.000
- gear: = 0
- fuel, tire, oils: = 5.000
- mechanic = 30.000
- camping etc. ` = 6.000
- Entry fees = 12.000
- fuel for you van = 5.000
- ferry tickets = 3.000
- toll roads: = 2.000
- depreciation van&camper, tools, etc = 10.000

Total: 93.000 euro
That excludes a salary for the rider, and no costs for a teammanager.

Would that be a ballpark figure for doing the 12 european rounds of MX2?

And no sorry, don't have any sponsorship available Tongue

From what I've heard it's closer to 200 000 euro. You have to buy yourself in to a team if you're not good enough or an up and coming rider who they really believe in.

I would consider the source good, the question is if I remember it right. But I think so.

My girlfriend asked me on the weekend during the emx250 race: "How much money do these guys make?". It got me thinking though, does someone like Mewse make any money or does he just get to ride for free?
